EvoCreo 2 review – “An enticing open-word monster-catcher”

  • Over 300 Creo to collect, upgrade, and battle
  • Enchanting 2D open-world
  • Teach your Creo new skills, like swimming, to reach new areas

If you’re into capturing mythical beasts, don’t miss out on EvoCreo 2! This fresh open-world game is all about the thrill of monster catching and it’s packed with cute creatures called Creos to gather. The strategic yet easy-to-grasp turn-based combats and lively pixel art style come together to create a magical, immersive experience in a fantastical world.

Fresh off your graduation from the Shoru Police Academy, news breaks about the vanishing of Creo monsters. This mysterious occurrence is linked to a defiant group aiming to abolish the EvoCreo sport. Your task now is to find out the reason behind these disappearances. Fortunately, as an Evoker, you’ll be assisted by any Creo you manage to capture during your adventure.

EvoCreo 2: Creo Basics

You’ll have the option to select a Creo from four available options upon beginning your journey, including the elephant-like Fylopin.  However, other Creos must be caught in battle to add them to your collection. You can attempt to capture any wild Creo during battle using a link. Bear in mind, however, that you can’t capture Creos when battling another character.

In EvoCreo 2, you can capture more than 300 creatures, which you can improve and use in combat, each with one or more elemental alignments such as void, water, or fire. The elemental properties are evident in their skills. Among the many creatures you’ll find are Seabo, resembling a hermit crab, Dodocan inspired by the dodo, Knightly Squirian, and Cinderphant, a fiery elephant-like creature. You’ll encounter Creos of various shapes and sizes throughout your journey.

Level Up Your Creo to Unlock New Abilities

Your Creos earn experience during battles allowing them to level up which unlocks better stats and even new abilities. For instance, most insect-like monsters begin with the nibble ability but eventually unlock Bug Bite which inflicts poison.

Instead of sticking with its initial Squirt attack, the reliable Fylopin has since unlocked Hurricane and Trident, which are much stronger water-based abilities. Like some creatures, Fylopin transforms into a Fylotrad when it reaches level 22, while Xeri can evolve to become Xermonious at certain levels.

Once a Creo exhausts their skill allotment, you’ll have to remove some skills to add the new ones you acquire. For instance, fundamental abilities such as Squirt or Nibble consume just one slot, whereas potent abilities like Nova Force or Hydroplane might need two or three slots. Despite its simplicity, combat proves to be intricate and incredibly enjoyable.

EvoCreo 2 Offers Epic Turn-Based Combat

Battles in EvoCreo 2 are turn-based, and you can have up to five Creos in your party at a time. Each Creo is represented by a dot at the top of the screen. A blue dot indicates your Creo is awake, red means the Creo has fainted and grey means there’s no Creo equipped in the slot.

During your phase, you have the option to choose an attack, change the current Creo, or pull an item from your inventory. It’s wise to arm your creatures with healing skills to minimize dependence on your stockpile of elixirs. Keep in mind that powerful attacks consume more energy, so monitor the energy meter and employ your strongest moves judiciously.

In each city, there’s a venue where you can compete with other Evokers. Victory in all three rounds at this venue earns you a prize and grants you the chance to confront the local Regional Area Guardian, or RAG. Overcoming a RAG typically yields a skill point, which can be used to acquire talents such as Rogue, boosting your monsters’ combat damage, or Miner, revealing concealed passages on the map.

Complete Intriguing Quests in EvoCreo 2

EvoCreo 2
has plenty of quests for you to dive into. You won’t see map markers leading you towards your goal, though. Instead, you really need to explore the world of Shoru, which includes diverse biomes like caves, deserts, forests and beaches. While this may be off-putting to some, I found it to be a refreshing change that led me to find hidden paths I otherwise may have missed.
While exploring Shoru, you’ll come across many citizens who could use your help. Some will ask you to retrieve their missing Creos or to trade one Creo for another.  Of course, you’ll also come across more distinct side quests.

For Insurance Fraud, your mission is to gather proof of fraud within a large corporation and pass it on to the authorities. In contrast, the Lost Swimmer quest calls for your help in rescuing a man who’s ventured too far out at sea. Regardless of which adventures you choose, you’ll be captivated by the enchanting open-world and breathtaking landscapes of Creos.

Teach Your Creo New Skills in EvoCreo 2

Certain monsters can learn abilities such as Hop, Swim, and Ride. To gain one of these abilities, you’ll need to visit the correct trainer with a compatible Creo equipped. Gaining abilities like Shove, Smash and Chop lets you remove obstacles to reach new areas. Hop lets your Creo hop up to reach ledges, while Ride lets you ride your Creo.

As I venture through this game, I often come across paths barricaded, ones that I can’t access yet without mastering specific skills first. This makes me eager to revisit locations I’ve been before, knowing that there could be hidden treasures waiting for me once I’m ready. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of acquiring a new skill and discovering what fresh challenges or rewards it opens up.

In a nutshell, EvoCreo 2 is an exceptional role-playing game that feels nostalgic with its monster-catching theme. Its strategic, turn-based battle system is challenging yet rewarding as you traverse diverse landscapes. With a massive open-world teeming with exciting locations to uncover, EvoCreo 2 provides captivating missions, lovable characters, and countless creatures to capture. To be frank, this compact monster catcher deserves high praise. Now, I’m off to catch some more Creos!
