San Diego Comic-Con Sets First International Edition for Spain in September

The thrill and costume play enjoyment of San Diego Comic-Con will be making its way to Europe. For the very first time in its history, SDCC is branching out beyond the United States, marking its European debut in Málaga, Andalucía, Spain this September, as announced on Monday by organizers.

From September 25-28, 2025, the city is set to stage the first international event authorized by San Diego Comic Convention, marking a significant milestone outside the United States. This remarkable achievement was made possible through the strong backing of the Junta de Andalucía and Málaga City Council, who are dedicated to establishing Málaga as the European hub for popular arts.

SDCC expressed their gratitude for this support.

The international expansion was announced at a gathering held by Santiago Segura, both director and screenwriter, at the Gran Hotel Miramar in Málaga. Attendees included Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla, president of Junta de Andalucía, Francisco de la Torre Prados, Mayor of Málaga, David Glanzer, head of communications & strategy for the organization related to SDCC, and Jaime López-Francos, CEO of Dentsu Spain & Portugal.

The gathering saw over 200 distinguished figures from the realms of film, entertainment, television, comics, and illustration in attendance, among whom were Álex de la Iglesia, Carolina Bang, Paco Plaza, Daniel Sánchez Arévalo, Natalia Verbeke, Paloma Bloyd, Eva Ugarte, Tamar Novas, Icíar Bollain, Carlos Areces, and Joaquín Mazón, as stated by SDCC.

Glanzer expressed great enthusiasm about honoring comics and pop culture, as well as embodying the one-of-a-kind vibe of Comic-Con. He’s thrilled to bring this experience to European audiences, and he couldn’t have chosen a more lively, inviting, and innovative city to launch this new phase for both fans and creators.

Added Bonilla: “By endorsing this event, the Andalusian government aims to establish Andalusia as a key player in digital art and pop culture, bolstered by an unparalleled assembly of talented individuals.

On Monday, we showcased a unique item, the Infinity Gauntlet, reminiscent of Thanos’ famous artifact from Avengers: Infinity War, crafted by Gentle Giant Ltd. The evening culminated with a presentation by the 501st Legion, an international group that appreciates all things Star Wars. Dressed as Stormtroopers and Darth Vader, they escorted guests to the final networking event.

The Monday gathering featured a special exhibit of the Infinity Gauntlet, modeled after Thanos’ legendary item in Avengers: Infinity War, made by Gentle Giant Ltd. The event ended with a display by the 501st Legion, an international Star Wars enthusiasts group, who, wearing Stormtrooper and Darth Vader costumes, escorted guests to the closing drinks.

At San Diego Comic-Con, attendees were treated to an exceptional ambiance filled with a specially designed cocktail and a remarkable performance. The event took an unexpected turn when some guests, disguised as ordinary attendees, broke into a flashmob dance, synchronizing their moves to the famous tunes of Mission Impossible. To top it off, everyone’s favorite droid, R2D2, made a surprise appearance, moving among the crowd to say hello.
