Monster Hunter Wilds allows you to embark on numerous missions where you confront monstrous creatures, with the chance of acquiring fantastic treasures in return. To aid you in this endeavor, you’ll need to design and create your own equipment, including weapons and armor. But it’s not just about raw power and statistics; there are moments when you want your character to exude style and panache during combat.
This tutorial demonstrates the process of donning multiple layers of armor in Monster Hunter World, enabling you to customize the look of your character.
How to Equip Layered Armor in Monster Hunter Wilds
Initially, make your way to either the main base or temporary camp, then navigate towards your own private tent. Inside the tent, find and open the armor selection interface. Browse through this menu until you reach the ‘Appearance’ tab located on the right-hand side. Once there, click on ‘Equipment Appearance’.
In this interface, you’ll find different layers of armor for each section of your character. You can personalize the Head, Chest, Arms, Waist, Legs, Shirt, Tights, and two Pendant areas. To customize, simply click on each area to open a menu displaying several armors available. Choose the one you prefer for your character. Remember to craft the armor or costume beforehand to avoid repeatedly switching between menus.
If you’re curious about why the armor you selected isn’t appearing, it’s likely because that particular armor is currently turned off. This often happens when you first access the layered armor menu for the first time. To enable your layered armor, look for the button on the right side of each armor piece; if it’s yellow, that means it’s active. You can deactivate any part of the layered armor at your convenience, which will make your default starter outfit appear instead. However, disabling the layered armor won’t affect the stats of your armor, so feel free to show off your starter outfit while battling powerful High-Rank monsters!
As a dedicated fan, I’d like to highlight that after choosing your desired armor, you’ve got another exciting feature: color customization! This can be found on the right side of the ‘Enable/Disable’ button. With this option, you can personalize the colors of both the primary and secondary layers of your armor, giving your hunter a one-of-a-kind appearance.
You’ve got the flexibility to pick your favorite shade from the color palette or experiment with the pre-set colors at the bottom of the menu for a quick change. Plus, you can take your customization even further by adjusting the hue, saturation, and brightness of your chosen colors! Enjoy the process of creating your unique masterpiece!

Currently, when you acquire a brand-new armor set for a trial run, your character’s visual appearance will stay consistent, but the performance characteristics (stats) will change as you wear the layered armor. You can even engage in combat against Nu Udra while sporting the starter outfit to flaunt your style.
That’s how you put on your preferred multi-layered armor in Monster Hunter Worlds. For newcomers, don’t forget to check out our helpful beginner guide!
