Initially gazing at “Deep Cover,” a unique blend of crime and comedy on Prime Video, you’ll find Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom, and Nick Mohammed trading the stage for the streets. As these skilled improv comedians dive into espionage work, they soon realize that it’s no joke. Empire Magazine provides these intriguing glimpses of the three main characters, who must adjust to their new undercover identities after years in the limelight. One picture captures Howard during a performance, while the other two images show the group in more modest settings.
The story for the movie “Deep Cover” was initially conceived by filmmaker Colin Trevorrow, who is known for directing films like “Jurassic World” and “Jurassic World: Dominion”, as well as co-writing all three Jurassic World movies. This idea came about in collaboration with his writing partner Derek Connolly, along with Ben Ashenden and Alexander Owen who also contributed to the script. Despite Trevorrow’s extensive experience with dinosaurs, he has a background in comedy, having attempted stand-up comedy early on in his career and interning for “SNL”. However, he clarifies that “Deep Cover” is being filmed as a serious, dramatic crime thriller because they aim to avoid any comedic elements visually.
Director Tom Kingsley shared with the media outlet that one reason for setting and filming the movie in London was to portray it as a gritty crime-drama with comedic undertones. He stated that by filming on location, they aimed to discover authentic, grittier parts of London where the characters could be seen navigating the city streets amidst real traffic. A snapshot from the production captures this setting, showing the three main characters walking along a relatively colorless street adorned with graffiti-covered buildings.
Welcome Back to the World of Espionage
Owen offered some fascinating perspectives on the main characters in the film, detailing the reasons why each individual became involved with improv. This diverse ensemble, it seems, is anything but typical, showcasing distinct traits and techniques that could prove valuable when they find themselves immersed in the world of espionage. He disclosed this intriguing detail to Empire during filming.
The main character, Nick, serves as our entry point into the story. He’s a man who feels mistreated at work, lacks respect, struggles to make friends, and seeks solace in improv classes to boost his self-esteem and social skills. On the other hand, Orlando is an intensely focused method actor utilizing improv as a means for character development and keeping his acting skills honed. Lastly, there’s Bryce, who leads the improv class, bringing together these three unique individuals with varying degrees of experience and objectives.
Previously, Bryce Dallas Howard and Orlando Bloom have embarked on undercover missions, not limited to the recent action-comedy “Argylle” where Howard portrayed Elly Conway, an author of spy novels who gets entangled in real-world espionage. This movie was released last year and can be streamed on Apple TV+. Bloom collaborated with Noomi Rapace, Michael Douglas, John Malkovich, and Toni Collette in the relatively unnoticed London-based thriller “Unlocked” from 2017. In this film, he played Jack Alcott, a minor criminal who unexpectedly teams up with a top CIA agent. The movie is now available on Netflix’s streaming service.
