Reflecting on the 2013 film “This is the End,” several aspects stand out. Firstly, it marked one of the last significant partnerships between Seth Rogen and James Franco before the latter’s controversy. Secondly, it represented one of the final instances where comedies consistently dominated box office successes. The movie is also notable for its array of high-profile celebrity appearances, ranging from Rihanna to a certain character from “Harry Potter.” Among these appearances, Emma Watson’s is particularly noteworthy, not just for her on-screen role but also due to the stories circulating about her being distraught over a specific line that led her to leave the set temporarily. Now, with some distance, Rogen has at last disclosed the reason behind Watson’s strong reaction.
In an interview with GQ, Rogen shared that during filming, Watson left the set when she declined to perform a scene alongside Danny McBride and Channing Tatum, as the latter was wearing a distinctive leather thong suit. Maintaining his laid-back demeanor, Rogen expressed that he wasn’t bothered by Watson’s response to participating in the scene because it wasn’t something she originally agreed to do. After resolving the issue, Watson returned and even helped promote the film, despite having a minor role within it.
Initially, I didn’t think her actions were justified, but upon reflection, I understand that things may not always turn out as expected when you read them. Our relationship didn’t have a disastrous conclusion. She returned the next day to bid farewell and even helped promote the film. There are no lingering resentments, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with how the movie turned out in the end…Perhaps she was correct. Maybe the way we ended up handling things made it funnier.
Emma Watson’s Cameo in ‘This Is The End’ Is One of the Comedy’s Best Moments
In the film “This is the End,” Emma Watson appears not once but twice. Her initial appearance occurs at James Franco’s party, where she joins other actors playing exaggerated versions of themselves, including Craig Robinson. Jay Baruchel is also present, and their interaction immediately becomes tense, leading Watson to label him as someone who doesn’t appreciate mainstream culture. Post the apocalyptic scene, Watson is among the few characters who survive, and later in the movie, she reappears for a sequence that adds even more humor to the plot.
Following the gang’s fortification within Franco’s residence, Watson makes a dramatic reappearance, brandishing an ax and sporting singed hair due to the harrowing incidents of the night. Unfortunately, it’s Baruchel who spoils any chance of harmony as he utters something decidedly unsettling, hinting that the group has ill intentions towards her. This remark pushes the actress into a frenzy, wielding the ax menacingly. In the end, Watson makes off with all their supplies, and McBride provides the fitting climax to the scene by exclaiming, “Hermione just stole all our stuff,” a nod to her character from the Harry Potter movies.
This particular scene is quite amusing and might even surpass what they initially planned for her, leading to her departure from the set. Interestingly, Seth Rogen, who’s been handling this situation admirably, explained in GQ that she didn’t storm off as angrily as the term “stormed” suggests.
As a devoted cinephile, I feel compelled to clarify a misconception that’s been circulating following my recent interview. There seems to be a misunderstanding about an incident on set that has been portrayed inaccurately. Contrary to popular belief, Emma Watson did not walk off the set in a huff. The scene was undergoing improvisation, and due to significant changes from the original script, it became something different from what she had agreed upon. The suggestion that Emma was unprofessional or difficult is absolutely baseless.
In a unique twist, the movie titled “This is the End” was both written and helmed by Rogen and Goldberg, marking their first directorial ventures. Essentially, it’s an expanded adaptation of their earlier work, “Jay and Seth Versus the Apocalypse“. Set in Los Angeles, the narrative unfolds around caricatures of the cast as they grapple with an apocalyptic scenario. Joining the ensemble are stars like Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, and a number of high-profile guest appearances. Notably, the film managed to rake in a staggering $126 million globally on a production budget of just $32 million.
