I want to emphasize: The tank issue in Marvel Rivals is quite significant, and it’s turning high-level matches into an endurance test.
In most of my ranked matches, I tend to play on my own. But if necessary, I’m open to partnering for duos or trios. As I advanced to Celestial 3, though, I found a significant problem: many players struggle with tank roles effectively.
Since the very first season, I’ve been deeply rooted in the tank role of Overwatch 2, having clocked over 2000 hours with Winston and Reinhardt alone. This extensive experience makes me quite familiar with this crucial role. However, it appears that in Marvel Rivals, there seems to be a lack of understanding or appreciation for the mechanics of tank characters.
For those primarily using Magneto and Doctor Strange, I frequently encounter the challenges of solo tanking. It’s not uncommon for a second tank to join in, only to find they’re rarely effective. A quick peek at their gaming history typically reveals they seldom use that character. It’s puzzling how some players manage to reach high ranks without more experience on their chosen hero.
Just Learn Tanks
As a passionate gamer, I’ve found myself drawn towards the thrill of being a Duelist, the damage dealers who dish out the kills. The instant dopamine hit from scoring points and showcasing my skills is hard to resist. Yet, there’s another side to the game that often gets overlooked – tanking.
Tanking isn’t just about taking damage; it’s about creating opportunities, managing space, and safeguarding my teammates. These tasks might not be as flashy or instinctive for a Duelist like me, but their importance in hero-based games cannot be overstated. Mastering the role of a tank can turn the tide of a battle and make all the difference in the game.
Start Small
To excel in Marvel Rivals, it’s highly beneficial to master various roles. Taking on the role of a tank can significantly enrich your game understanding, offering a unique viewpoint about battle dynamics. Therefore, I recommend that those who primarily play as Duelists consider experimenting with at least one tank character.

You’ve got numerous tank options available to match various playstyles, so you don’t need to rush into Ranked mode immediately. Begin with baby steps – win some, lose some, and learn the ropes. Quick Play is an excellent platform to experiment with Vanguards and discover one that aligns with your style. Who knows? You might find it quite enjoyable.
Higher Win Rate
In the current game scenario, although some players are advocating for a triple-support setup, the 2-2-2 composition continues to have the highest success rate. If you’re finding it tough against a three-support team, keep in mind that their lack of damage is your key advantage. An additional tank to manage space can swiftly shift the momentum of the game—provided they know how to excel at their role effectively.
It’s quite common, even among high-level players like Grandmasters and Celestials, that they overlook this point. Often, players aim to take the spotlight, so they opt for Duelists instead. However, Tanks don’t usually make headlines or have flashy kill streaks; instead, they diligently perform their roles, ensuring victory by providing a solid foundation.

Indeed, there seems to be an issue with tanks in Marvel Rivals, and it’s high time for more gamers to take on this role. Who knows? The upcoming hero in Season 2 could potentially be the frequently discussed Emma Frost as a Vanguard. If she does appear, you might regret not having tank expertise by your side.
