It‘s been disclosed that Ayo Edebiri faced death threats and racist remarks following Elon Musk’s post of a fabricated news article about her potentially taking over Johnny Depp’s role in the Pirates of the Caribbean series. In February 2024, Musk circulated a phony report suggesting Disney was considering Edebiri for the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise with the comment, “Disney Sucks.” Known for spreading misinformation, this particular headline stirred up troublemakers who directed their hostility towards the Emmy-winning actress from The Bear.
In an Instagram post (as reported by Variety), Edebiri described an incident where Musk sharing a false Pirates of the Caribbean news article led to her receiving some of the most extreme death threats and racial slurs she’s ever encountered in her life. Edebiri made it clear that there is no truth to the claim that she’s connected to the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean movie, and she used strong words to criticize Musk, labeling him an “idiot” and a “fascist,” the latter term being a reference to Musk giving what seemed like a Nazi salute at Donald Trump’s inauguration in January.
I recall receiving some extreme death threats and racial abuse (which might be my number one moment, though it’s certainly in the top 3), all for a reboot of a movie I wasn’t even familiar with. It’s hilarious! This man is not only a double salute fascist, but also quite ignorant. Nevertheless…
In the current scenario, Disney is working on a new installment for the Pirates of the Caribbean series, but Keegan-Michael Key (Edebiri) isn’t involved. Regarding Johnny Depp’s participation, it’s yet to be determined as both producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Depp himself have expressed differing opinions about his return as Captain Jack Sparrow. Depp has stated that he may not work with Disney again following a contentious defamation case with his ex-wife Amber Heard. There were initial discussions about a Pirates of the Caribbean spin-off starring Margot Robbie, but the status of this project is uncertain.
It’s likely that Robbie didn’t encounter the same level of harsh criticism or dangerous online messages as Edebri did, which underscores a significant ongoing issue within fandom communities and social media platforms.
The Dangers of Sharing False Information
In many online attacks against Edebiri, you may find individuals who view the inclusion of actors of color as forced diversity or virtue signaling, and some of these same people might be ardent fans of Johnny Depp. These Depp supporters have shown a pattern of hostility and defense towards their idol, believing he was unjustly treated in his divorce with Amber Heard. They often lash out at those they believe are taking roles from Depp. It’s undeniable that fan communities have grown increasingly toxic, and social media has made it effortless to issue death threats or racist remarks, particularly towards women of color. Actresses like Kelly Marie Tran (from Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Moses Ingram (in Obi-Wan Kenobi), and Rachel Zegler (in Snow White) are only a few examples of those who have faced vile racist comments from certain fan groups. It’s crucial to remember that affection for a franchise should never lead to issuing death threats or using racial slurs – such behavior is unequivocally unacceptable.
Edebiri’s account underscores the significance of sharing accurate news, as pursuing sensational stories to boost clicks or posting unverified headlines can lead to harmful and potentially dangerous outcomes. It appears that Musk may have simply glanced at the headline without fully reading the story before reposting it. However, his act of sharing gave credibility to a false news report, which then led to his followers sending abusive messages, including death threats and racial slurs, to an innocent woman with no justification.
The recent placement of Musk by the Trump administration as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which has shown limited competence thus far, appears to have been a misstep. It seems questionable to entrust such significant authority to an individual who struggles to distinguish fact from fiction, even in matters as trivial as film castings.
