Nice Men

The popular reality show “Love is Blind,” which examines whether emotional bonds can overcome physical attraction, is receiving some criticism from viewers after its eighth season. In its fifth year now, the series features single men and women who date without seeing each other, forming deep connections through conversation inside the pods. Over time, Love is Blind has gained a huge audience and inspired numerous international adaptations. However, Season 8 has attracted negative attention for the perceived lack of quality among its male contestants on social media platforms.

In a recent conversation with Rolling Stone, Executive Producer Ally Simpson highlighted the show’s focus on portraying “decent gentlemen.

As someone appreciating the genuine gentlemen portrayed on this show, I strongly believe that kind-hearted individuals are the ones who find success here. What we truly need are compassionate men. At times, I worry that social media might discourage these sincere souls from joining our community. To help alleviate this concern, we’ve invited past participants who admire our show to reach out to potential contestants before they arrive. They offer insights into the realities of being on the show and help put them at ease.

The emphasis on amiability in this series comes after a period filled with splits due to political disagreements and off-camera scuffles involving two of the participants. Despite the cameras capturing six Minnesota couples who left their pods still engaged, only one couple, Taylor Haag and Daniel Hastings, ended up getting married. In fact, Daniel had already won over viewers as the most popular male cast member before the audience even witnessed him saying his vows.

‘Love is Blind’ Season 8’s Controversies & Disappointments

Out of the remaining pairs, it was only Monica Danús and Joey Leveille who actually got married. However, Ben Mezzenga and Sara Carton, as well as Devin Buckley and Virginia Mille chose not to tie the knot due to disagreements on political and social matters. Unfortunately, Lauren O’Brien and David Bettenberg split up before their wedding day, with Bettenberg receiving criticism online for over-relying on outside opinions rather than trusting and valuing O’Brien’s voice. Simpson admitted that the show should handle sensitive topics like politics responsibly.

She mentioned that such issues significantly impact relationships, and we prioritize discussing them authentically, something many unscripted shows struggle with. We aim to mirror the broader society in our approach to these topics.

The broadcast on March 9th sparked even more disapproval among viewers. Even likable Leveille, who was popular throughout the series, faced criticism for flirting with a female castmate while engaged to Danús. Meanwhile, TikTok drama involving Mezzenga did feature in the show (with Carton challenging claims from a social media user that Mezzenga had manipulated women), but allegations about another cast member’s past behavior, which were rampant online, were not discussed on air. There were rumors circulating that Alex Brown, who didn’t progress beyond the pods, had previously hosted parties where he supplied alcohol to minors. Despite attending the reunion, Brown was not asked about these troubling allegations (at least not in the version of the episode released publicly).

Supporters frequently praise the original US season of the show as being the most genuine, a sentiment expressed before its expansion into numerous international adaptations such as Brazil, Sweden, Argentina, Mexico, Japan, and the UK. It’s safe to say that Season 8 of Love Is Blind won’t be remembered as one of the series’ strongest seasons. Although not every season can be a Cameron Hamilton or Brett Brown, we hope that the next season of Love is Blind, in its pursuit of “nice men”, will prove more engaging and satisfying for viewers.
