Warning: This article contains spoilers for Moana 2
Just a short while ago, Moana 2, the eagerly awaited sequel to Disney’s animated adventure movie, graced our theater screens, but its finale has already hinted at the possibility of a third chapter. Originally conceived as a series for Disney+, Moana 2 underwent a transformation into a full-length film when Disney officials were impressed by preliminary footage and decided it deserved a grand cinematic outing.
Indeed, the outcome of that choice turned out to be a tremendous triumph as the follow-up raked in an astounding $1.05 billion globally while only costing $150 million to produce. Given the overwhelming success of Moana 2, surpassing its predecessor, and the narrative evolving towards a broader universe, speculation among fans about a potential Moana 3 is already brewing.
The sequel to Moana concluded on a triumphant note, as Moana performed the ultimate sacrifice but was miraculously revived as a demigoddess by her ancestors. This suggests that the hero’s tale is far from over, and it seems like her adventure may be only beginning. In an interview with Comic Book Movie, directors David Derrick Jr. and Jason Hand shared that Moana’s new role as a demigod will form the basis for future movies, highlighting the film’s unexplored possibilities. To quote them directly: “Moana’s status as a demigod will be instrumental in shaping the direction of upcoming films.
It’s clear that there’s a great deal of unexplored power in the concept of her being a demigod, which we find intriguing. In fact, it seems fitting for her character. As we crafted the story, our aim was to illustrate that Moana still has much to learn and transform. While we haven’t fully realized this yet, I believe it’s a direction that resonates with her character development.
The fact that she consistently acts with good intentions emphasizes her true character, and it’s no surprise that this trait culminated in her actions throughout the story. By the end of the film, her demigod status serves as a testament to her being more than she initially perceived herself to be, which was our intention all along.
‘Moana 3’ Is Happening Even If It Hasn’t Been Officially Greenlit
As a fan, I can attest that in today’s entertainment world, it’s not unusual for a movie or TV show to be abruptly ended due to various factors. However, when it comes to “Moana,” things are quite different. Despite the fact that its sequel film was a massive commercial success, and Disney has chosen to convert it from a television series into a feature film, this decision underscores the incredible potential of the franchise at the box office.
Even though Disney hasn’t yet made an official declaration about Moana 3, there are already plans brewing for a sequel. Given the numerous opportunities for growth within the Moana series, especially with intriguing events like Nalo and Tamatoa’s unforeseen alliance in Moana 2, where Tamatoa sought retribution against Moana, it seems plausible that we might see Moana 3 someday. However, it could be several months, if not years, before this becomes a reality. In the meantime, fans can get excited about Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Moana, featuring Dwayne Johnson.
