The Rocky franchise was given a new lease of life with the Creed franchise, and legendary producer Irwin Winkler recently shared an update on both the next installment of the Michael B. Jordan-led movie series, along with unexpected new details about the upcoming movie looking at how the original Rocky came to be made.
Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky movies delivered some knock-out punches before ending up on the canvas after the fifth movie in the franchise. Despite plenty of skepticism, when Creed was released in 2015, the film became instrumental in reviving the saga and giving it a new story to tell. Now fans have been waiting patiently to find out what is happening with Creed VI, and when we spoke to Irwin Winkler, he was happy to share an update on exactly where things are right now. He told us:
” [We’re] doing a ‘Creed IV’ with Michael B. Jordan starring and directing again, so we’re just working on a script right now. We hope that’s a couple of years from now, and that’ll be that for a while.”
Irwin shared his Creed update while discussing his upcoming Mafia epic The Alto Knights, which stars Robert De Niro pulling double duty as real-life mob bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello in the mob war that would effectively end the Cosa Nostra. Winkler teamed up with writer Nicholas Pileggi and director Barry Levinson to pull off the unique take on this pivotal chapter in mafia history.
The ‘Rocky’ Franchise Update Nobody Expected
The Rocky franchise has evolved past the character of Rocky, and is now three chapters deep into the life of Adonis Creed, played by Michael B. Jordan. Winkler, however, provided an interesting update to the world of all things ‘Rocky’ with regards to a film in the casting process now. That would be a new movie charting the creation of Stallone’s original Oscar-winning sports drama. Winkler said:
“There’s an interesting movie that I have nothing to do with all of it. I read the script on it. It is the making of ‘Rocky’, how it actually went through, and they’re casting my part right now… I suggested Brad Pitt, but he was too old. I was younger at the time.”
It sounds like this is the same film Peter Farelly mentioned a while back, and it’s advanced to the casting stage. With Brad Pitt out as Winkler it’s anyone’s guess as to who will be cast as the major players. It sounds similar to the concept around The Offer, which took a deeper look at the wild making of The Godfather. We expect more updates on the Rocky film as well as Creed IV soon. The Alto Knights is in theaters March 21, 2025.
