Legendary science fiction figure Peter Weller, who originally brought the renowned character to life in the 1987 release of RoboCop, has expressed interest in reprising his role for the upcoming Amazon Prime Video reboot. When asked about his potential involvement, Weller stated that he would consider returning if the script and compensation align with his expectations.
After Amazon’s purchase of MGM Studios in March 2022, a reboot of “RoboCop” is being planned, with both a film and TV series being considered. In an interview with TMZ about his latest book “Leon Battista Alberti in Exile: Tracing the Path to the First Modern Book on Painting,” Peter Weller hinted that he might return for more action against crime and introspective struggles, expressing his interest in reprising the role.
Regarding the potential RoboCop reboot, I’m unsure at this point. If the script is compelling and the compensation is fitting, I’d be open to considering the opportunity. However, I wouldn’t travel to North Korea for filming, but if the offer is enticing, I might consider it.
‘RoboCop’ Remains One of the Most Iconic Sci-Fi Action Franchises
Initially brought to life in 1987, RoboCop is one of the most enduring and identifiable characters within the realm of science fiction. Directed by Paul Verhoeven and scripted by Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner, the original RoboCop takes place in a crime-plagued, impending future Detroit, focusing on police officer Alex Murphy (portrayed by Peter Weller), who, following his gruesome demise at the hands of a vicious criminal gang, is reborn as a cyborg peacekeeper by the powerful conglomerate Omni Consumer Products. As he struggles to recall his past life, RoboCop follows Murphy’s journey towards regaining some semblance of humanity, while the film skillfully skewers themes such as consumerism, capitalist excess, corporate malfeasance, and ultra-violent action films.
The character RoboCop has been extensively expanded through multiple spin-offs, including two less popular sequels named RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3, various television series, an animated program, numerous video games, and comic books. A reboot of RoboCop was attempted in 2014 by director José Padilha with Joel Kinnaman in the lead role, but it didn’t achieve the same level of success as the original.
The specifics about Amazon’s future plans for RoboCop are largely kept secret, but last year it was made public that a series is in development. However, whether this will be a complete reboot or a sequel following the original storyline is yet to be decided. Peter Ocko (known for Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies, The Office) has been announced as the writer, executive producer, and showrunner, with James Wan (Aquaman, The Conjuring, Fast and Furious franchise) joining as an executive producer. A brief outline of the series has been disclosed; you can read it below:
