Actor Jason Isaacs has retracted some of his earlier statements regarding nudity in Hollywood, specifically concerning the fourth episode of the latest season of The White Lotus, after stating that there is an unequal approach to questioning actors and actresses about nude scenes. Notably, Isaacs is a member of the ensemble cast for The White Lotus’ third season alongside Walton Goggins, Carrie Coon, Leslie Bibb, Michelle Monaghan, and Aimee Lou Wood. In episode 4, Isaacs appeared without clothing in a scene, leading to numerous interviews about the moment. More recently, the actor has expressed regret for his initial dismissive responses to these queries.
In an interview with Variety, Isaacs clarified his earlier statements regarding the distinction between male and female nudity in films and television. He stated, “I chose my words poorly.” Contrary to what it might seem, he did not intend to use the term ‘double standard’. Instead, he emphasized that there is indeed a significant disparity – women have historically been objectified and men have not. In his previous interview, Isaacs had posed a question to the journalist about whether they would ask actresses like Mikey Madison from Anora and Margaret Qualley from The Substance similar questions regarding nude scenes, as he pointed out this double standard persists.
It was evident that Isaac felt uneasy when queried about nudity during interviews, as he expressed, “I found myself incessantly questioned by reporters, ‘Are you wearing a prosthetic?'” In simpler terms, they were asking, “Have I seen your private parts?” He found this line of questioning odd and slightly compulsive. He thought he could handle it casually, but his response was far from satisfactory.
Jason Isaacs Offers an Apology to Mikey Madison and Margaret Qualley
Jason Isaacs’ initial comments sparked controversy due to the “double standard” he referenced, particularly naming actresses Mikey Madison and Margaret Qualley. However, he later expressed regret for doing so, stating, “I should not have mentioned those two actresses, whom I hold in high regard.” He clarified that his admiration for Mikey Madison is immense, and emphasized that his intention was never to suggest that men have suffered more than women, which would be unfounded. Instead, he hopes that the challenging experiences women face on camera will soon improve.
Besides feeling uneasy about the inquiries himself, Isaacs expressed that he preferred to sidestep the queries regarding nudity to keep the focus on the show and avoid detracting from the genius of its creator, Mike White.
In the third season of “The White Lotus,” Isaacs portrays Timothy Ratliff, head of the affluent Ratliff family. Over the course of five episodes so far, we’ve been uncovering the means by which Timothy amassed his fortune, and it seems the repercussions are starting to surface. With just three episodes remaining this season, the tension for both Timothy and us viewers is bound to escalate as we approach the thrilling conclusion in episode 8. Fresh installments of “The White Lotus” air every Sunday on HBO and Max.
