Despite the upcoming release of “Elio” in June 2025 being a significant focus for Pixar, it seems the animation studio is also looking ahead to the future. During the Disney 2025 annual shareholder meeting, Bob Iger revealed an exciting piece of news – early development has begun on a 2029 feature titled “Coco 2”. The specifics of the plot are still under wraps, but with Miguel and his family set to return, I can’t help but speculate about the captivating storylines we might encounter.
Should you find yourself unsure, let me remind you that the initial movie centered around Miguel, a 12-year-old kid who inadvertently stepped into the Land of the Dead. During his journey, he uncovered the past of his great-great grandfather. By the end, Miguel successfully persuaded his living relatives to see Hector not as an enemy but as a family member, and assisted Mama Coco in crossing over peacefully.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, it’s hard not to speculate about the upcoming sequel given that the original story was so richly set in the lively Land of the Dead. I’m inclined to believe that we’ll find ourselves in Miguel’s hometown, Santa Cecilia, this time around, offering a deeper dive into Latin culture. My theory is that one of Miguel’s ancestors might inadvertently cross over from the Land of the Dead into the Land of the Living during Día de Los Muertos and somehow get trapped there, leading to an exciting new plotline!
It seems unlikely that Hector will make the journey across since his character was already developed in the movie Coco, but on the other hand, Mama Coco recently crossed over in a heart-wrenching moment, which makes one hopeful that she’ll reunite with her parents who she clearly yearned for. That being said, any other relative from Miguel’s family line could potentially be part of the story.
It’s possible that Victoria, another daughter of Mama Coco who is also Elena (Miguel’s grandmother)’s sister, may find herself trapped in the Land of the Living once more. Due to limited information available about her and the fact that she wasn’t married before her passing, she could make an intriguing protagonist for a sequel, as her character remains largely a mystery.
One possible scenario might involve someone from Victoria’s past placing a photograph of her on their altar (ofrenda) – perhaps an estranged partner who is approaching the end of their life. This action could prompt Victoria to stray from the rest of the Rivera family while crossing the bridge, as she is drawn towards this living individual. If she delays her return to her own family, the bridge might close, thereby trapping her in the world of the Living, instead of allowing her passage to the Land of the Dead.
Given that Victoria was raised in Santa Cecilia, just like Miguel, it might be simpler for her to locate her family’s house and bond with Miguel, who understands the feeling of being stuck in a world that isn’t your own. However, keep in mind that if Miguel can even see her at all, given that the Living typically can’t perceive the Dead, is yet to be determined.
In terms of story ideas, if Pixar is currently contemplating the appearance of “Coco 2”, here’s one concept I’d propose: Given that the original film won two Academy Awards, the sequel will undoubtedly have big expectations to meet. Fortunately, with the original creative team on board for the follow-up, it seems we’re in capable hands. So, stock up on tissues because Disney is likely to produce another emotionally stirring movie that’ll bring tears to our eyes once more.
With an active Disney+ subscription, you’re able to stream “Coco”. Also, remember to keep an eye out for the future Pixar films that will be released over the next couple of years.
