At the Human Rights Campaign’s Los Angeles event on Saturday, actress Hannah Einbinder from the show “Hacks” took the stage and shared thoughts regarding the persistent conflict between Israel and Palestine.
The actress was given HRC’s Visibility Award due to her efforts in increasing LGBTQ+ representation both on and off-camera. She then addressed the audience, stating, “My queerness and Judaism are part of a legacy of social justice. To me, they represent a shared human tradition, a compassion for all forms of human life – every human life, equally.”
The actress earned HRC’s Visibility Award by boosting LGBTQ+ representation in the film industry, both on and off-set. Speaking to the crowd, she expressed, “My queerness and my Judaism embody a social justice heritage. For me, they symbolize a universal human value – the concern for all human beings, without discrimination.
Showing clear signs of emotion, she exclaimed, “Being a queer individual, a Jew, and an American, I am deeply disturbed by the Israeli government’s slaughter of more than 65,000 Palestinians in Gaza. I feel ashamed and enraged that this mass killing is supported by our U.S. taxpayer money. It should not be a contentious issue to state that we should all oppose the killing of civilians.”
In a strong display of emotion, she asserted, “As a queer person, a Jew, and an American, I am appalled by the Israeli government’s massacre of over 65,000 Palestinians in Gaza. I feel disgraced and furious that this mass killing is backed by our American tax dollars. It should not be a debated topic to express that we all should stand against the slaughter of civilians.
Einbinder stated that her criticism of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza isn’t contrary to her upbringing in Hebrew school, but rather it stems from it. She expressed her deep love for being Jewish and immense pride in her heritage. She was taught that a key aspect of Judaism involves questioning, seeking knowledge, debating different perspectives, and challenging one’s own beliefs to foster continuous learning and personal growth as a person and a global citizen.
She believes that it goes against our most fundamental Jewish teachings to blindly follow without questioning the actions of a state committing atrocities in our name. She asserted that Israel’s actions do not represent Jewish security, and it is the misguided association of Israel’s actions with the Jewish people that continues to pose a threat to Jews.
Then, they pointed out Mahmoud Khalil, a well-known Palestinian activist, who was apprehended and held in custody recently due to his activism at Columbia University.
Mahmoud Khalil, advocating for peace alongside Palestinians and Jewish students against Israeli bombings in his homeland, doesn’t give me a sense of unease. However, the actions of Elon Musk and Steve Bannon saluting Hitler do. Similarly, Donald Trump labeling white nationalists carrying Tiki torches who chanted ‘Jews will not replace us’ as ‘very fine people’ does.
Einbinder summed up, “The fight for freedom we seek will triumph if we vocally challenge the corporations causing global devastation and the systems leading to massive human loss. Being visible carries an obligation. Those of us with a voice should utilize it to prevent speech from becoming completely outlawed.
At the gathering held at Fairmont Century Plaza, both Janelle Monáe and Ashley Park from “Emily in Paris” were recognized, featuring a live performance by David Archuleta.
