As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but marvel at how deeply engrained in pop culture the Final Destination horror series has become. Scenes of a log-laden truck on an expressway, thrilling roller coaster rides, and even passing over a suspended bridge have all become shorthand for nightmare material, demonstrating that death—as well as life—will always find a way to surprise us. Spanning five gruesomely violent yet sometimes comical films, fans were treated to an array of imaginative methods of demise. Now, the original director, James Wong, has shared his favorite lethal moment in the series, which left no doubt that tanning beds could indeed be death traps!
Wong discussed with Bloody Disgusting the enduring impact of the Final Destination series, the unavoidable nature of death, and how an absurd idea turned into a box office hit: “When Final Destination was released, the critical response wasn’t exceptionally positive initially, but it persisted. Typically, a film falls out of the top 10 within the first three weeks, but ours remained high up for quite some time.
The TV show writing job he held for ‘The X-Files’ led to a speculative script that eventually transformed into the 2000 film, ‘Final Destination’, serving as his feature directorial debut. A quarter of a century later, he remains enthusiastic about rectifying past issues: “Warner Bros. graciously provided us with funds and time to enhance the movie’s color digitally.” Remarkably, he reflects that ‘Final Destination 3’ was the most enjoyable filmmaking experience for him and features his preferred death scene.
In my opinion, making that film was likely the most enjoyable experience I’ve had while shooting a movie. I felt completely assured that we were on the right track and knew what we were doing. We were confident about the kills and the characters. The scene that stood out to me the most – aside from the bus hit, which was a thrilling, unexpected surprise – is the tanning bed sequence.
In a more straightforward and conversational manner: “I truly empathized with those girls. Dying in your clothes is one thing, but exposing yourself so openly like they did was quite another. On set, the tanning beds weren’t uncomfortable, but their reactions made me feel uneasy. It was at that moment I realized it was going to be effective.
The ‘Final Destination’ Franchise Returns in 2025 With ‘Final Destination: Bloodlines’
2011 marked the debut of “Final Destination 5,” and since then, we’ve missed the thrilling Rube Goldberg-style opening sequences that predict impending doom. But after a long wait in production limbo, the “Final Destination: Bloodlines” film is set to rekindle our fears on May 16, 2025. Wong was gracious enough to share his thoughts on the franchise’s return.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I initially believed that the fifth installment served as the final chapter, wrapping things up neatly by returning to the roots of the original story. But, my excitement levels have skyrocketed now that they’re not stopping there! Frankly, I haven’t got the foggiest idea what the sixth film will encompass, but I’m thrilled about it and so is everyone else who’s seen the trailer and test screenings! I can’t wait to uncover its mysteries, along with the rest of the audience. Craig Perry, our franchise producer, has shared that there’s been a lot of love for the sneak peek and the movie itself in previews, so my anticipation is at an all-time high!
frankly speaking, I didn’t anticipate that film would outshine its predecessor, but I must admit, I’m delighted by its longevity. It’s been a remarkable 25 years, and I feel quite proud of its continued success.
