The Devastating True Story Behind ‘Everest’

On May 10, 1996, I found myself among four daring groups, Adventure Consultants led by Rob Hall and Mountain Madness led by Scott Fischer, embarking on a summit attempt for Mount Everest shortly past midnight, aiming to wrap up by 2:00 PM. However, climb delays and relentless weather conditions turned the ascent into a daunting challenge, costing us precious hours.

Suddenly, an unforeseen blizzard descended on the mountain, trapping us near the summit at high altitude, burying the fixed ropes and putting experienced climbers like Hall and Fischer in a tough spot as they fought to guide their teams down from the peak.

Due to intense oxygen shortage illness, continuous snowfall, and unexpected sickness among some climbers, the two teams faced an unyielding storm. As the oxygen supplies dwindled, everyone grew susceptible. The guides and Sherpas grappled with the immense pressure to reach the peak while ensuring safety and keeping clients anchored. However, as the blizzard raged fiercely, communication faltered due to extreme disorientation and physical fatigue, leading to the separation of groups and team members amidst the relentless weather conditions.

Regrettably, despite the valiant attempts by Hall and Fischer, their teams found themselves overpowered by the harsh mountain conditions. Tragically, both leaders, along with six other climbers, lost their lives on the mountain. A satellite phone provided a way for Hall, who was suffering from frostbite and exhaustion, to bid farewell to his wife waiting in New Zealand. Remarkably, he chose to stay behind with a client he refused to abandon. Unfortunately, while attempting his own climb, Fischer grew progressively ill and weary, eventually succumbing to hypothermia, making him the only casualty of the Mountain Madness expedition.

The tragic event that occurred on Mount Everest in 1996 represented one of the deadliest and most disastrous periods in its history, resulting in significant loss of life up until then. This incident, often referred to as one of Everest’s bloodiest seasons and tragedies, attracted widespread media attention and sparked debates about the commercial exploitation of the mountain. Journalist Jon Krakauer, who was among the survivors, recounted the harrowing experience in an article for Outside magazine and later published a book titled “Into Thin Air,” which detailed the traumatic journey, featuring interviews with his fellow climbers. In a 2015 interview with HuffPost Live, Krakauer shared his deep remorse over taking part in the climb and stated:

Attempting to scale Mount Everest was an enormous regret in my life that I’ve come to realize. If only I hadn’t gone, perhaps I could have avoided the years of struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder, a battle I still fight today. However, writing a book about my experience has been beneficial. Looking back, if given the chance, I wouldn’t have climbed Everest.
