Warning: SPOILERS for the NCIS episode “Moonlit” are ahead!
Approaching the anniversary of the NCIS Season 21 finale, we find ourselves a year on, and the enigma surrounding Gary Cole’s character Alden Parker and the unrecognized girl named Lily has remained intriguing. Since his ordeal in “Reef Madness,” Parker has been encountering visions of Lily in his daily life, prompting him to consult Dr. Grace Confalone for help. The recent NCIS episode titled “Moonlit” from the 2025 TV schedule has unveiled a significant revelation about the origin of the Lily mystery. However, this disclosure came at a cost as it revealed some heart-wrenching history about Parker that left me stunned.
In tonight’s NCIS episode, the team collaborated again with Special Agent Dale Sawyer, a recurring character who has previously appeared in episodes such as “Gut Punch” from Season 18, “Fight or Flight” from Season 19, and “Big Rig” from Season 20. During this case, which included Sawyer’s private security business, an endangered frog species, a contentious divorce ending in one partner’s murder (for the full story, watch “Moonlit” on Paramount+), Parker continued to grapple with Lily’s ongoing influence. He even visited Jimmy Palmer at the start of the episode to request a sketch of the girl.

In December, NCIS showrunner Steve D. Binder told TopMob that the Lily mystery would result in Parker gaining a profound realization about his family background, which was confirmed in the episode “Moonlit.” During a video call, Parker shared Jimmy’s sketch with his father, Roman, who didn’t recognize Lily but refused to discuss Parker’s mother when prompted by his son. The topic has always been sensitive for them. Not long after, Roman abruptly left his Las Vegas vacation and returned to Washington D.C., intending to reveal the truth about how Parker’s mother perished to him.
Instead of passing away from a stroke several years following her departure from her husband and son, as Parker had long suspected, Parker’s mother met an instantaneous end in a tragic drunk driving accident. As recounted by Roman, one day she returned home inebriated with young Parker in tow, claiming they were visiting friends, though Roman could not fathom who these friends were, and Parker doesn’t recall that particular day at all. An argument ensued between his parents, she drove off furiously, and Roman exclaimed that if she left, she should never return. Approximately an hour later, the sheriff transported a shocked Roman to another town to witness her car entangled around a tree.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I can’t help but express my excitement over the news that LL Cool J is set to reprise his role in the NCIS universe! Having been part of both the LA and Hawaii teams, his return promises a fresh wave of energy that I eagerly anticipate. The details are still under wraps, but with such a dynamic actor like LL Cool J on board, I’m confident that the upcoming episodes will be nothing short of riveting!
Recently, I had a conversation with Brian Dietzen from NCIS regarding the possibility of co-writing an episode dedicated to David McCallum’s character. During our discussion, he shared insights about how the fans responded to Ducky’s emotional departure scene.
In this rephrased version, Alden Parker discovering the truth about his mother’s demise would have been captivating enough for an episode of NCIS, but “Moonlit” had another surprise in store. As the night wore on, Gary Cole’s character stumbled upon a news article online about the accident that took his mother’s life. On closer examination, he noticed a girl in one of the photos who resembled Lily remarkably. This suggested that whoever Lily is, she shares some connection with his mother.
Could we possibly figure this out? It might take until NCIS Season 22 wraps up for us to find the answer, but given the uncovered “flight plan” of the Kansas City mob and the mystery surrounding it, I’m hopeful that we’ll get some resolution. For now, my suspicion is that Lily was among Parker’s mother’s close friends during their visit, yet this discovery only raises more questions. Who were these individuals that his mother concealed from his father? Why didn’t they step forward after her passing to Roman? And most crucially, is Lily still alive? If so, could she provide some insight into the events of years past?
Given that Steven D. Binder hinted these disclosures about Alden Parker’s past could impact the present as well, I have a strong feeling we might witness him encountering/reuniting with Lily in the current timeframe. Regardless of the outcome, at least Parker now understands the truth behind his mother’s fate, even though it was hard to learn.
