Max Lamb and Salon 94 Unveil The 50 Armchair

Building upon the success of his 60 Chair project where he crafted sixty chairs using basic industrial materials within a span of three days, designer Max Lamb, in collaboration with Salon 94, has presented the 50 Armchair.

Crafted with precision from hand-carved and carefully constructed polystyrene, this understated packaging and insulation material forms the basis of Lamb’s latest project collection, expanding upon their Economy Chair series. The ongoing investigation into polystyrene as a versatile yet undervalued resource is characterized as a “material performance exploration,” as each piece is personally assembled by Lamb within a tight timeframe.

For this new version, Lamb makes changes to the design by incorporating extra arm rests and giving each item a vibrant “Coca-Cola” red color. Instead of following a conventional rectangular shape, each item showcases a polygonal cut, resembling structures typical of Brutalist architecture. The connection is apt as both Lamb’s work and Brutalism favor rough finishes and efficient use of materials. Like his earlier designs, each piece has its own distinct personality and minor variations, reflecting the designer’s hands-on approach to each creation.

In response to industrial waste posing a growing environmental risk, innovative designers such as Max Lamb are brainstorming methods to minimize waste and reinvent the possibilities of undervalued manufacturing processes and materials. Frequently repurposing or salvaging industrial scraps, this designer often highlights flaws and inconsistencies, advocating for visual representations of circularity as a stylistic aspect.

For a limited period, the exclusive chairs designed by Max Lamb, known as “The 50 Chair,” will only be available in a special color. Each chair will cost $6000 USD. Starting today, these unique pieces will be showcased by Salon 94 at Design.Space LA.
