Jon Buscemi has a penchant for high-quality items. In fact, he’s the man behind those coveted 24-karat gold-adorned sneakers that ruled streetwear conversations in the mid-2010s. Designing luxury sunglasses and Italian leather boots is just par for the course for this West Coast designer, whose name became synonymous with quality and luxury living.
But that was then.
As I divide my time between sunny Los Angeles and Palm Beach, I’ve found myself diving into a fresh hobby that perfectly aligns with my refined palate: golfing. Previously, this meant donning a blend of Ralph Lauren, vintage golf treasures, and timeless FootJoys. However, I’ve recently switched teams and can’t help but flaunt the distinctive “Chequy” insignia of Redan on the course.
Just like numerous brands start out by identifying gaps in their fields, Redan is the high-end label Buscemi envisions having been missing. Although there’s affluence in many parts of the golfing industry, golfers aren’t particularly known for their fashion sense. However, Redan’s initial collection of apparel, including polos, sweaters, and chinos, is painstakingly produced at the same factories as some of Italy’s top designer labels, but at a significantly lower cost.
However, it’s important to note that while you may find interest in the Redan golf brand’s debut collection, access is limited. This exclusive brand caters only to its members, who are granted privileged access to their website for placing orders. The membership list, though small, is swiftly expanding. Each season, the collection evolves, featuring collaborations with prestigious brands such as Tiffany & Co. and FootJoy. Members can conveniently place their orders through a private mobile app, and they also have the opportunity to sign up for an exclusive event calendar at some of the world’s most desirable golf destinations.
Hypegolf got an exceptional chance to join the Redan group for a weekend at one of their founding members’ getaways, during which we had a chat with Buscemi to gather insights on his newest venture.
Why are we down here at the Floridian Club?
On this occasion, we’re embarking on our fourth group outing with Redan, which serves as a tangible demonstration of our shared experiences. Beyond being an apparel brand or a concierge service, Redan stands for more than just collaborations and trendy items. It symbolizes the notion of uniting people and fostering a sense of community.
We’re going on our 4th outing with Redan, which gives a real-life example of what we’re about. Redan is not only an apparel brand, it’s not just a service, it’s not just cool things and collaborations. It’s all about bringing people together and creating a community.
Fundamentally, our membership is exclusive, by invitation only. The experience we offer includes gathering 12 individuals at an exceptional location in Palm City, Florida – the Floridian Club – where they can enjoy excellent cuisine and wine, engage in stimulating conversations, conduct business, discuss future ventures, and play top-tier golf. In essence, it’s a blend of fine dining, networking, camaraderie, and leisure activities.
As a gamer, I’ve drawn inspiration from various sources and merged them together, filtered through the lenses of style and golf’s essence. The result is a collection of timeless, heirloom-worthy apparel.
What did you feel was missing in the golf space that made you want to start Redan?
The brand concept stemmed primarily from a need rather than luxury. For nearly a decade, I’ve been playing golf in my everyday attire, not specialized golf clothing, although there might have been some golf-related items. Of course, we appreciate style and fashion, and enjoy having unique items that others don’t. The thought was, many men work five days a week, then dress up on Saturdays to play golf, and a significant portion of these weekend attire are not well-made.
As a fan passionate about fashion, I wanted to craft an extraordinary experience through Redan, beyond mere clothing. It’s not just about the feel of the fabric but evoking a unique sensation that resonates with its history and purpose. Partnering with Italian textile mills I’ve built bonds with for two decades, we’ve innovated fabrics previously used in fashion, integrating technologies perfected for golf. The essence of this concept was to create something distinct with a hint of nostalgia. We all cherish the charm of Arnold Palmer and Harrison Ford from the ’60s and ’70s, and the iconic figures like Dustin Hoffman and Tiger Woods from the ’90s.
The inspirations we draw from various sources are blended together, filtered through the perspectives of fashion and golf, resulting in timeless garments. Our designs aren’t made for a one-time use. Instead, you’ll find Sea Island cotton, silk-blend polo shirts, cashmere/merino wool hybrids with a touch of elasticity, and trousers that boast technological attributes for enhanced mobility. Essentially, we’re merging style with practicality.
How did you leverage your past experience building brands to carve out a space for Redan?
Lucky for me, I launched my personal brand, Buscemi, back in 2011, which took off quite nicely. Being a game enthusiast, I can say that starting this venture felt like leveling up! I got to design shoes, clothing, and leather goods all around the globe, but when it came to choosing a location, Italy was my top pick due to its unmatched craftsmanship in apparel and footwear. With a rich heritage in textile manufacturing, partnerships with factories, designers, and production houses that span decades, even generations, stepping into production wasn’t as challenging as it might have been otherwise. It was like having a secret power-up in the world of fashion!
Everyone has a fondness for Arnold Palmer and Harrison Ford from the ’60s and ’70s, as well as Dustin Hoffman and Tiger Woods from the ’90s.”
In this sentence, I’ve restructured the original to make it more natural and easy to read. The main idea remains the same: expressing a love for famous figures from specific decades.
Who are your partners and what do they bring to the table?
As a tech enthusiast myself, I’ve got some exciting news! Having spent a significant part of my career at Meta and Facebook, our CEO brings a wealth of tech knowledge to Redan. That means our app, whether on your phone or computer, serves as your one-stop hub for all things travel, golf bookings, and even shopping for apparel. Plus, you’ll be among the first to know about our upcoming FootJoy collaboration – it’s going to be a hole in one!
We established an advisory group comprised of exceptional individuals who span various fields, such as artists, industrial leaders, business magnates, golfers, and golf professionals. The beauty of golf lies in its ability to unite these diverse realms, and my associates come from a multitude of backgrounds. Through golf, we converge and each contributes unique abilities, resulting in a broad spectrum of collaborators.
What’s the long term vision for Redan?
For Redan, our ultimate goal is to establish a renowned golf apparel and accessory brand that stands out among the rest, not because of any boastfulness, but due to unparalleled quality. We aim to create timeless pieces, or “heirloom garments,” designed to endure for generations.
In addition, our goal is to partner with some of the most renowned and esteemed brands globally. This includes collaborating with Tiffany on golf ball markers and divot repair tools, as well as working with Bettinardi and FootJoy in the golf industry. Furthermore, we are teaming up with culinary brands to create an inspiring lifestyle that reminds me of peering through the windows of fashion houses since my teenage years.
Aiming to imitate and unify an ethos that transcends beyond golf, travel, attire, and golf course selection. It encompasses much more than these individual aspects. It’s the total experience, the culmination of each element working together harmoniously.
