It appears that Warner Bros. could secure a successful run at the cinema with their upcoming release of “Sinners“, according to early box office projections. Directed by Ryan Coogler and featuring Michael B. Jordan, “Sinners” is an original R-rated vampire horror-action movie that Warner Bros. intends to showcase as their main attraction for Easter weekend. While it’s unlikely that “Sinners” will break all-time Easter weekend records, the surge in advance ticket sales on Tuesday, Mar. 26, suggests that it could make a substantial impact at the box office, potentially taking a significant chunk out of its earnings.
According to reports from Deadline, the film “Sinners” is predicted to earn approximately $40 million during its debut weekend over Easter. However, some experts are currently estimating a slightly lower opening weekend of $30 million. It’s important to note that the film’s full marketing campaign hasn’t been launched yet, which could potentially boost these projections. If “Sinners” manages to achieve a $40 million opening, it would place it as the fourth-largest debut weekend of 2025, trailing behind “Snow White,” “A Minecraft Movie,” and “Captain America: Brave New World.
Over the Easter holiday, Warner Bros. has experienced significant success. Although the upcoming movie “Sinners” is expected to underperform compared to some of their top holiday releases such as “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” ($181 million), “Godzilla vs Kong: The New Empire” ($87 million), “Clash of the Titans” ($67 million), “Ready Player One” ($47 million), and “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” ($45 million), its projected opening is still noteworthy for a film based on an original idea. With an estimated opening in the $40 million range, it’s nearly on par with the earnings of “The Secrets of Dumbledore” and even approaches the earnings of “Ready Player One”.
‘Sinners’ Could Help Turn Warner Bros. 2025 Slate Around
Interestingly, among the three movies released by WB within a month, “Sinners“, along with “Mickey 17” and “The Alto Knights“, are original ideas from renowned directors featuring a single actor in dual roles. While “Mickey 17” garnered positive reviews, its $19 million opening weekend was underwhelming and it has so far grossed around $40 million – similar to the estimated earnings of “Sinners” in just three days. Despite all the buzz surrounding “Snow White‘s box office performance, fewer people noticed that the real flop over the weekend was “The Alto Knights“, a film greenlit by Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav. Its dismal $3.1 million earnings in its first three days indicate it could be one of the year’s biggest box office disappointments.
The studio is aiming to shift the momentum, as a Minecraft movie is anticipated to have one of the most successful opening weekends for a film based on video games, and Sinners is set to come next. At the moment, everyone’s attention is focused on James Gunn’s Superman this summer, but the box office success of Sinners could be equally significant because it may encourage studios to keep backing original directorial concepts and provide them with adequate funding. Warner Bros. executives Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy are placing a large bet on Sinners, having secured a 25-year license for the film, with the rights returning to Coogler after the term ends. If Spike Lee’s endorsement is anything to go by, Warner Bros. seems to have made the right decision with Sinners.
