The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has issued an apology to its members for failing to publicly stand with Hamdan Ballal, co-director of “No Other Land“, following his recent arrest and assault in the West Bank, in his native village of Susiya.
On Monday, Yuval Abraham, an Israeli director known for co-directing the Oscar-winning documentary “No Other Land,” asserted on X (previously Twitter) that a band of settlers had assaulted a Palestinian filmmaker. Abraham explained that Ballal was subsequently apprehended by the Israeli military, but upon his release the next day, he was found to have sustained injuries to his head and abdomen.
After the incident, Academy leaders Bill Kramer and Janet Yang issued a statement on Wednesday expressing that the assault and detention of Ballal may elicit varied opinions among Academy members. However, they chose not to identify the filmmaker in question. This stance was met with criticism by hundreds of Oscar voters and several documentary branch members, who felt it lacked support.
Last Friday, Kramer and Yang issued a fresh declaration to AMPAS members, stating, “Earlier in the week, we responded to reports of violence against Oscar winner Hamdan Ballal, who co-directed the movie ‘No Other Land.’ We are sorry for not explicitly mentioning Mr. Ballal and his film in our initial response.
We genuinely apologize to Mr. Ballal and every artist who felt neglected by our earlier statement, and we’d like to clarify that the Academy unequivocally opposes such violent acts globally. We strongly detest any form of censorship, particularly when it comes to freedom of speech.
