Tomb Raider

As a passionate cinephile, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the next chapter in the Tomb Raider series, a project spearheaded by the brilliant Phoebe Waller-Bridge. However, it seems that this promising venture is encountering turbulence at Prime Video. Initially announced in 2023, Waller-Bridge, renowned for her work on the critically acclaimed series Fleabag, was set to create a new Tomb Raider series under Amazon’s production wing. The project was officially given the green light in May 2024, and by November of the same year, stars like Sophie Turner (from Game of Thrones), Lucy Boynton (Sing Street), Mackenzie Davis (Terminator: Dark Fate), and Emma Corin (Deadpool & Wolverine) were all being considered for the coveted role of Lara Croft. Turner eventually secured the part.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I’ve come across some troubling news about the Tomb Raider streaming series. According to a report by Puck, the production of this series has faced significant challenges behind the scenes. Amazon Prime Video reportedly invested tens of millions of dollars in developing the show, yet there’s seemingly little to no tangible progress. The series has cycled through two writers’ rooms and remains without a finalized script. Despite this, it appears that Alicia Vikander, who plays Lara Croft, is still involved with the project, but further details regarding her role are scarce.

Originally, Jennifer Salke (who was then in charge at Amazon MGM Studios) had offered Phoebe Waller-Bridge a multi-million dollar contract in 2019 for content development. However, due to both the impact of COVID-19 and creative disagreements with Donald Glover on their proposed adaptation of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, no projects were produced within the initial three-year timeframe. In 2022, Salke renewed Waller-Bridge’s deal for another three years and closely supervised the development of Tomb Raider. Unfortunately, as of 2025, Waller-Bridge has yet to produce any work, and Tomb Raider remains unproduced. Now, with Salke having been dismissed from her role as head of Amazon MGM Studios and moving on to a producer deal instead, Waller-Bridge has lost a key supporter in her creative endeavors.

Amazon MGM’s Struggles with ‘Tomb Raider’

Obsidian, with Vikander returning. However, in July 2022, MGM Studios relinquished the rights to the Tomb Raider film franchise, effectively canceling the planned sequel. This shift occurred around the same time Amazon acquired MGM Studios and rebranded it as Amazon MGM, which subsequently returned the Tomb Raider film rights to video game creator Square Enix in January 2023.

Originally, it was intended to link a fresh “Tomb Raider” movie to Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s upcoming “Tomb Raider” series, creating a unified narrative across multiple platforms akin to the Marvel Cinematic Universe on Disney+. However, due to the prolonged development challenges facing Tomb Raider, there’s uncertainty about how long Amazon MGM Studios will sustain Waller-Bridge’s vision for the franchise. Despite their current focus on James Bond, Tomb Raider remains a significant brand that Amazon MGM probably won’t want to hold for an extended period.
