This year’s Cinema Con has been a delight for DC enthusiasts, offering glimpses of fresh footage from James Gunn’s Superman, as well as inviting the film’s cast on stage. Moreover, attendees were privileged to watch the first sneak peek of the most daring and distinctive project in the DC Universe to date… Dynamic Duo. The new movie was unveiled last December, with a focus on Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, the initial two Robins under Batman. Previously, we had learned that the project would showcase an exceptionally unique style of animation, and those at Cinema Con were among the first to see it.
After Warner Bros.’ display at Cinema Con, online articles emerged detailing the snippets from the upcoming animated film Dynamic Duos that were shown. These clips were a part of a larger showreel for Warner Bros. Animation. As per @TheMoviePodcast, the footage includes the Batmobile smashing through a pillar and one of the Robins (suspected to be Dick Grayson) traveling on a subway. The footage didn’t offer many plot details. Nevertheless, all reports emphasized the stunning and beautiful animation quality.
In previous discussions, James Gunn has expressed his desire for DC Universe characters to appear across various formats (such as live-action and animation). However, it came as a surprise when this concept was applied within the same movie. Initially announced, the upcoming film “Dynamic Duos” would be a joint production by Swaybox (a new puppetry studio) along with DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation. The movie is said to combine animation, puppetry, and computer-generated imagery. Regrettably, fans will have to wait until June 30, 2028, to witness the completed film. If you thought creating animations took time, filming with puppets takes even more.
Who Are Dick Grayson and Jason Todd in the DCU?
If you’re a fan of Batman comics or the DC Animated Universe, you’ll likely recognize the names Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. Yet, both characters haven’t had their justice done in major film adaptations. Technically, Dick Grayson has made it to the big screen, portrayed by Chris O’Donnell in Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. However, those performances might be better left unremembered.
Initially, Dick Grayson, who hailed from a circus family, was the original Robin in comic books. Tragically, his parents were killed by a crime lord in Gotham City during a performance. Afterward, Bruce Wayne, who happened to be present, took him under his wing and eventually tutored him as Robin. Grayson subsequently forged his own superhero identity as Nightwing. Conversely, Jason Todd was initially a mischievous kid caught stealing wheels from the Batmobile. Rather than punishing him harshly, Batman provided him with food and empathized with his orphaned background before taking him in. Later on, Todd adopted the persona of Red Hood following a series of tumultuous events involving The Joker.
For quite some time now, fans have eagerly anticipated the on-screen partnership of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, famously known as Robin and Red Hood respectively. Not only are they set to feature in “Dynamic Duos,” but they’re also expected to make an appearance in “The Brave and the Bold,” a film that will reportedly debut Batman within the DC Universe.
