Many of us, including myself, have been thrilled when Lionsgate officially announced that John Wick: Chapter 5 is under production. The movie has been a popular topic since John Wick: Chapter 4 wrapped up filming, but this week, the studio made it official at Cinemacon that the fifth installment is in the works.
Undeniably, one challenge that the upcoming sequel must tackle is the fact that the main character has supposedly perished. Even popular artist Kanye West, known for stirring up a lot of commotion through social media, posed this question: how will they address John Wick’s apparent death in the next installment? Kanye voiced his curiosity on Twitter about this very issue.
Let me clarify, I’m not sure how his return from the dead works. Frankly, I preferred “Terrifier” better when it was just a regular character rather than being mystical.
Is it rational to wonder how John Wick might be brought back to life given the conclusion of the last movie was satisfying yet purposefully ambiguous about his possible return?
In the closing scenes of “John Wick: Chapter 4,” Keanu Reeves‘ character seems mortally injured, with the camera transitioning from him bleeding to death to his supposed grave. However, a considerable amount of events would seem to have taken place between these two instances. Notably, Winston and the Bowery King, who are standing over John’s grave, hint that he might not be truly interred there, suggesting that there could still be more to unfold in his story.
Chapter 5, it won’t require any extraordinary narrative twists to make clear that John Wick is indeed alive again.
In essence, it seems unlikely that Kanye West should worry about the new film altering John Wick’s character into something mystical or supernatural. As is, John Wick is already portrayed as an incredibly tough and nearly invincible assassin. Adding more mysticism to his character might make him resemble The Crow, but that’s not necessary for the character we know and love.
Information about John Wick 5 isn’t fully disclosed at this point. Although a storyline might exist, it seems that the final script hasn’t been refined yet, implying filming may still be some time away. However, fret not, fans! There are currently three distinct spin-off projects underway within the franchise for your enjoyment.
This year, you’ll catch the spin-off of “Ballerina,” led by Ana de Armas, featuring Keanu Reeves, and later on, a spin-off film focusing on Donnie Yen’s character Caine (also directed by him) is being developed. Lastly, an animated movie is underway to narrate the tale of John Wick’s “Impossible Task,” which initially set him free from his old life.
