65-year-old Val Kilmer passed away on April 1, 2025, with heartfelt condolences pouring in from his fans and colleagues via social media. Despite being known for his challenging work ethic, Kilmer was cherished by some, including Hilarie Burton. She fondly remembered their collaboration on the 2010 film “Bloodworth” through a touching Instagram post. One memorable story she shared was how Kilmer eliminated a sex scene between them because it didn’t align with the narrative or characters.
Initially, Burton had planned to follow the usual course of action in the scene, but she was delightfully taken aback when she learned it was modified upon Kilmer’s request. Instead, the scene transformed into one where the characters were grilling barbecue, a development Burton described as “infinitely more interesting.” She went on to express her feelings, saying, “I felt so secure and valued by that man… He shifted the focus of the scene from being a mere prop to making it about us. That single day at work significantly altered my perspective.
Val was always kind to me. A thoughtful artist. I purchased some of his artwork a few years ago. May every young actor have a Val in their lives. Working with him on that movie was a memorable experience.
Val Kilmer has refused racy scenes in other projects
Back then, in 2009, while filming “Bloodworth”, I (as a gamer) didn’t have the luxury of an intimacy coordinator to make me feel more comfortable during any potentially uncomfortable scenes. Interestingly, Val Kilmer also showed his preference for avoiding explicit content even before this, as he turned down raunchy material in that production and possibly others.
In 2010, Kilmer portrayed the malicious character Dieter Von Cunth in the film “MacGruber.” Director Jorma Taccone contemplated including a scene where MacGruber (Will Forte) severed Dieter’s private part and reinserted it into his mouth. Taccone shared with Yahoo! Entertainment, “We wanted to put [the male organ] in his mouth. We proposed the idea many times… He said, ‘Let me interrupt you here.'” Additionally, Kilmer has expressed career regrets, one of which was declining the role of Jeffrey Beaumont in David Lynch’s “Blue Velvet” because of its explicit content and discomfort with the script.
Without a doubt, Kilmer was a dedicated actor who always stuck to his convictions. He didn’t shy away from turning down significant roles or altering scenes during production if he had different ideas. Moreover, he refused to be stereotyped and worked across various genres. His versatility was evident in films like “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” where he showcased his comedic skills, and action-packed projects such as “Top Gun” and “Batman Forever.” The impact of his work is enduring, with fans and colleagues like Burton ensuring that Kilmer will long be remembered.
