The widely acclaimed TV show creator responsible for the hit neo-noir series “Yellowstone”, is once again tasting success, this time due to another popular creation of his. One of his projects that has sparked debate among viewers, a high-octane action thriller, has climbed up Netflix’s charts and now sits comfortably in the top 3 on their coveted top 10 list.
Originally released in 2018, “Sicario: Day of the Soldado” is now the new director, Stefano Sollima, leading the charge for this crime-thriller series. The franchise was initially introduced by Taylor Sheridan and Denis Villeneuve, who is also known for directing “Dune”, with the critically acclaimed “Sicario” in 2015. Currently sitting at #3 on the US Netflix charts, it trails behind the comedy “One of Them Days” and romantic drama “The Life List”, but beats out Gerard Butler’s poorly-received disaster movie “Geostorm”. As it was only added to Netflix on April 1st, expect its position to rise further.
Featuring again Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin, Jeffrey Donovan, and Raoul Trujillo, who were part of the initial storyline, and introducing Isabela Moner, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Catherine Keener to the cast, Sicario: Day of the Soldado received a more mixed response compared to its predecessor. On Rotten Tomatoes, it garnered 62% approval from critics, while audiences on Popcornmeter gave it a score of 68%. In a new development, FBI agent Matt Graver enlists the help of enigmatic operative Alejandro Gillick when it’s discovered that Mexican drug cartels are sneaking terrorists into the United States. The conflict intensifies when Alejandro abducts the daughter of a powerful kingpin in an attempt to heighten the tension. As the young girl becomes caught up in the crossfire, Graver and Gillick must make crucial decisions about her fate while questioning the very reasons behind their ongoing struggle.
Taylor Sheridan’s Action Thriller Series ‘Lioness’ Is Coming to Netflix
Enthusiasts of the Sicario series have been eagerly anticipating news about a potential third chapter. Tentatively called Sicario: Capos, MovieWeb recently had a chat with Thunder Road Films’ key figures, Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee. Erica mentioned that they are currently brainstorming ideas for the storyline that would justify a third movie.
We’re considering creating another film in this series, and it seems the cast is open to returning. However, we need to decide where the story should go next. We’ve been brainstorming, discussing, and planning about it quite a bit. These movies hold a special place in my heart, and I believe they form an incredible franchise. Denis [Villeneuve] set the bar high for us, and since then, our cast members have achieved great things. Taylor [Sheridan] has also developed his own universe, so we’re trying to find a way to bring everyone back together. Ideally, we’d like to reunite all three actors in the next installment.
Regarding Taylor Sheridan’s work with Netflix, his lesser-known action series titled Special Ops: Lioness, featuring Zoe Saldaña of Marvel Cinematic Universe fame and an Oscar winner as a CIA agent who gathers female operatives called Lionesses to stop another 9/11 event, will debut on the streaming service in Australia, Canada, and Latin America starting from April 17th, 2025.
