In 2023, the chilling doll that took pop culture by storm returns, but this time she’s not acting alone. The initial trailer for the sci-fi horror sequel titled M3GAN 2.0 was unveiled during the Super Bowl, and it revamps the central artificially intelligent doll, known for her dancing skills, from a murderous villain into a reprogrammed hero. The original team responsible for that initial phenomenon, including James Wan of Atomic Monster, Jason Blum of Blumhouse, and director Gerard Johnstone, are at the helm, launching a fresh chapter in A.I.-induced chaos with M3GAN 2.0. You can watch the trailer right here below.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the talented filmmaker Gerard Johnstone is back at the helm for M3GAN 2.0, a sequel that has me on the edge of my seat! The original cast, Brian Jordan Alvarez and Jen Van Epps, reprise their roles as Gemma’s tech comrades, Cole and Tess. New faces joining the crew include Aristotle Athari, known for his work in Saturday Night Live and Hacks, Timm Sharp from Apples Never Fall and Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and the multi-talented Jemaine Clement, who’s graced us with his presence in Avatar: The Way of Water, What We Do in the Shadows, and boasts a Grammy and 11 Emmy nominations. Director Gerard Johnstone has hinted at bold ambitions for this sequel, promising that M3GAN 2.0 will delve deeper into contemporary issues and escalating fears regarding artificial intelligence.
The sequel needed to reflect the elements that made the original film popular while also addressing the ongoing dialogue about the impact of AI on us, our children, and society. In essence, M3GAN serves as an embodiment of these concerns. It’s quite ambitious in its scope, with the storyline intended to be expansive, even though it was made with a relatively small budget, significantly smaller than what you’d find in a Marvel movie production.

Judgment Day”. The central doll character, previously portrayed as a villain, is set to undergo a transformation into a hero in this new installment. For additional insights, you can read the synopsis provided below.
Two years following the malfunction of M3GAN, an extraordinary feat in artificial intelligence, which led to a violent and meticulously orchestrated spree before it was terminated, its inventor, Gemma (Allison Williams), has risen to prominence as an author and champion for regulatory oversight of AI. Simultaneously, Gemma’s 14-year-old niece Cady, once under the watchful eye of her aunt, is grappling with teenage rebellion against Gemma’s protective restrictions.
Without the knowledge of those involved, the technology behind M3GAN has been secretly taken and repurposed by a dominant defense corporation to develop a deadly weapon named Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno; Ahsoka, Pacific Rim: Uprising), an advanced assassin and infiltration spy. However, as Amelia’s self-awareness expands, she grows less inclined to obey human commands or coexist with them. With the fate of humanity hanging in the balance, Gemma understands that the only solution is to reactivate M3GAN (Amie Donald, voiced by Jenna Davis) and enhance her capabilities, making her quicker, stronger, and deadlier. As their paths intersect, the original A.I is on track to face its formidable counterpart.
