Despite what the doctors said last year, Adam Devine (of Pitch Perfect, Workaholics, and The Righteous Gemstones) doesn’t seem to believe he is near death.
Devine has been experiencing persistent pain that he attributes to an accident from his childhood, where a cement truck struck him, shattering all the bones in both his legs.
Currently, Devine describes having “severe muscle spasms everywhere,” as he expressed in a recent chat with Graham Bensinger. He referred to his situation as “a terrifying ordeal.
Due to his deteriorating condition, Devine was diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome, which is also referred to as Moersch-Woltman Syndrome. This is a seldom seen neurological disorder that causes progressive muscle rigidity and painful spasms, frequently triggered by stimuli such as sound or touch.

Devine was diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome, a rare neurological condition also known as Moersch-Woltman Syndrome. This disease results in progressively stiff muscles and painful spasms that can be easily triggered by stimuli like noise or touch.

In the end, it was discovered that Devine had Stiff Person Syndrome, a disease more formally known as Moersch-Woltman Syndrome. This is an unusual neurological condition characterized by progressively stiff muscles and painful spasms that can often be set off by stimuli like noise or touch.
Devine explained the situation like this: “If your muscles become so stiff that you can’t walk or move at all, it means your heart will stop working because the heart is also a muscle. When it becomes too rigid to beat, you die. So, in essence, the typical lifespan is around six years.
It’s quite frightening; in a 2024 documentary titled I Am: Celine Dion, singer Celine Dion bravely shared her battles with the disorder.
Devine shared that for some time, physicians had informed him that he was close to death. In fact, just this past year, they had given him this grim prognosis.
At the most inconvenient moment, Devine received a devastating diagnosis and poor prognosis about his health, just a month prior to the birth of his firstborn son, Beau, in February 2024. (Devine’s son was born in February 2024.)
Devine remembered feeling disheartened, thinking, ‘Now, it seems I’ll never make it,’ because he knew his six-year-old son would only remember him as someone who was incapacitated.
Devine experienced a great sense of relief when his doctors referred him to the leading expert in Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS), who confirmed that he does not have Moersch-Woltman Syndrome, a condition associated with the two Mayo Clinic physicians who first discovered and defined SPS. Instead, his current issues are connected to the aftermath of Devine’s childhood accident.
In his current state, Devine shared that prolonged sitting, standing, and walking all cause discomfort. To alleviate this, he needs to perform foam rolling sessions about two to three times daily, along with stretch exercises similarly scheduled throughout the day.
Despite 2024 hip surgeries not providing significant health benefits, as Devine puts it, “I believe the stem cell treatment I received in Medellín, Colombia is showing some improvement.” He further notes that he currently feels “the best” he has in approximately three years.
(The goal here was to maintain the original meaning while improving readability and flow.)
However, he’s hardly showing off acrobatic feats or performing action movie stunts. It’s unfortunate since initially, Devine aspired to become a “comedy-action star.” Now, it seems those dreams have faded away.
Devine stated that he will be the comedic element in the upcoming action film alongside the action star, who will handle all the action sequences.
