What has left many fans feeling disappointed with this decision is that it appears targeted at “true fans,” which in turn annoys those who have been loyal supporters of the Switch since its initial launch. Essentially, making the Switch 2 difficult to obtain was one issue, but adding insult to injury by making long-term fans feel as though they aren’t loyal enough is a whole other matter. This situation only serves to highlight how selfish and profit-driven Nintendo can be, as they seem more interested in rewarding customers who consistently provide them with annual revenue.

From a contrary perspective, Nintendo has expressed their intention to combat scalpers, and it seems they’ve found a strategy. Making gamers demonstrate playtime on a Switch console and subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online for reservations could be perceived as an exclusive approach, but it does restrict scalpers aiming to acquire units. However, the scarcity of these devices might extend the wait for Switch 2, potentially leading to a resurgence of scalping if Nintendo isn’t cautious.

As a dedicated fan, it sometimes feels like Nintendo is waging a battle against us regular consumers, simply because we yearn for the normal ownership experience of their consoles. However, I understand that their primary goal is to combat scalpers, which is commendable. Yet, the restrictions they’ve put in place do give off a somewhat dystopian vibe.
