It might seem that consistently delivering Top 10 hits to the streamer would guarantee a flood of profits for , but it looks like his upcoming shows may encounter obstacles more daunting than action-packed scenes of war or cattle ranch raids. Instead, he could be up against the dreaded reduction in funding – a budget cut.
Similar to numerous streamers, Paramount+ has been experiencing various transformations, one of which involves a shift in leadership. As reported by Puck, this transition could result in a series of budget reductions across all Paramount television productions, including those from the highly influential TV producer, Taylor Sheridan.
Showing his versatility as a writer, Taylor Sheridan expanded his portfolio in 2018 by launching the successful drama series Yellowstone. Featuring a well-known cast including Kevin Costner, the initial narrative of the Dutton family was straightforward. However, the series’ remarkable popularity prompted Paramount to eagerly seek more stories, resulting in spinoffs like 1883 and 1923. Simultaneously, Sheridan also developed Tulsa King for Sylvester Stallone’s first significant TV role, along with Mayor of Kingstown, Lioness, and Landman.
Although many of these series are continuing for additional seasons and Taylor Sheridan has two more Yellowstone spin-offs planned, a recent report indicates that the new streaming head, Cindy Holland, intends to significantly reduce budgets on all television shows to approximately $9 million per episode, a decrease from the current spending of up to $16 million. Although Taylor Sheridan’s future with Paramount+ appears stable, the report implies that the writer is not overly pleased with this development.
Taylor Sheridan Could Find a Home For His Work Elsewhere
It’s highly unlikely that Sheridan would simply accept whatever budget he’s given for his TV shows, even though he has several ongoing projects at Paramount and a few years left on his contract. If the allocated budgets hinder the scale and vision of his projects, other streaming platforms would eagerly step in to work with him instead.
Sheridan consistently works with top-tier actors like Costner on Yellowstone, alongside stars such as Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, Demi Moore, Jon Hamm, Billy Bob Thornton, and Zoe Saldaña. This star power comes at a high price, plus the expenses of filming in multiple U.S. locations for extended periods. It’s possible that Sheridan might need to cut costs by using sound stages more often or reducing external scenes. However, this shift could potentially lead to tension during the next two years.
