Mel Gibson’s Gun Rights Restored by Justice Department (Report)

Mel Gibson has reportedly had his gun rights restored by the Justice Department.

As a gamer, I was among the fortunate 10 individuals who recently had my gun privileges restored by Attorney General Pam Bondi, as reported by The New York Times last Thursday. Further details regarding this decision are expected to be made public in the Federal Register soon. Back in 2011, I unfortunately lost my right to bear arms due to a domestic violence misdemeanor conviction.

The verdict arrived almost four weeks later following Elizabeth G. Oyer, the ex-U.S. pardon attorney, informing the Times that she was dismissed from the DOJ due to her unwillingness to suggest that the actor be reissued a handgun permit, a claim which was verified by sources with knowledge of the situation.

Earlier, Oyer communicated to the Times that Todd Blanche’s office, as Deputy Attorney General, petitioned for the inclusion of Gibson, who was designated by President Trump as a special envoy to Hollywood this year, on a list of individuals allowed to have their firearm privileges reinstated. At that moment, it was mentioned in a letter from Gibson’s legal team that the actor had recently tried to acquire a handgun but was declined due to his previous conviction.

According to the Times, Oyer expressed concern about the proposal to involve Gibson, as she was unfamiliar with his case compared to the other cases her working group had investigated. “Returning guns to individuals with a history of domestic abuse is a grave issue I wouldn’t take lightly,” Oyer said, “as there are severe repercussions when such individuals possess firearms.

Eventually, she communicated to her superiors at the DOJ in a written document that she wouldn’t endorse restoring Gibson’s gun privileges and left it to the discretion of the Attorney General to decide. Later, she learned she had been terminated from her position.

The Hollywood Reporter reached out to Gibson’s rep for comment.
