Not too long ago, Anurag Kashyap called out Netflix for their perceived hypocrisy towards content creation in the Indian market. His criticism was met with a partial agreement from Gulshan Devaiah, who admitted to seeing some validity in Kashyap’s claims, but also clarified that he has never functioned as a creator within this context.
In a recent chat with Bollywood Hungama, Gulshan Devaiah was queried if he concurred with Anurag Kashyap’s views that streaming platforms don’t offer the same creative liberty to Indian show creators as their international peers do.
In his statement, the actor explained, “I’d rather not be the one to grumble, yet I’ve always sensed that we could excel more from the start. There will be limitations. India, being a unique country, is incredibly intricate and diverse. It has aspects that unite us, as well as factors that divide us. The fact that we’re still united is nothing short of remarkable!
He went on to clarify that complete unrestricted expression is an unattainable ideal, acknowledging that there will always be certain limits and requirements. The Ulajh character conceded that sometimes it’s necessary to struggle and go against the prevailing current, while at other times, one must find innovative methods to convey their narrative.
In essence, Gulshan concurs with his point of view. However, he’s not in agreement with the allegations he’s putting forth because he lacks comprehensive knowledge about them since he isn’t a writer or a script creator. He has never engaged in conversations related to scripts. His focus is solely on contracts. Moreover, Gulshan believes that more compelling narratives can be crafted as there are numerous deep-rooted Indian tales waiting to be told.
To put it simply, for those not familiar, Anurag Kashyap criticized Netflix in his extensive review of Adolescence, saying: “How can we make something so powerful and truthful when working with a group of the least honest and morally questionable individuals from @netflix.in, who are backed so strongly by their bosses in LA?
As a lifestyle expert, I’d like to share my perspective: If I were pitching this show as an Indian filmmaker, I believe it might not have been greenlit for a television series. Instead, the story could have been molded into a compelling 90-minute film.
