In his latest role, now resides at Chicago Fire as Chief Dom Pascal. During a chat with George Edelman from MovieWeb, the actor reminisced about other series he has worked on and pondered over the possibility of revisiting any of them in the future.
In the current trend of reviving nostalgic series, such as Frasier and Buffy, among others, Mulroney expressed his desire for a comeback to one particular show, which unfortunately seems to have passed its opportunity. He stated:
In my perspective, there are a few characters from various shows that I’ve longed for their return, but this desire has primarily been sparked by the convenience of television over movies, as revisiting characters in the same timeline often requires prequels or sequels, which can feel like entirely different entities. However, if a character survives within a series, there’s always a glimmer of hope that they might reappear later on. For instance, I was eagerly anticipating the return of the character from Shameless who appeared earlier in the series but wasn’t seen in the later episodes.
Another character that many people, myself included, have been clamoring for is Reverend Johnny from The Righteous Gemstones. I had the fortune of appearing alongside them in the first episode, and I can attest to their exceptional performance. Unfortunately, it has been announced that their fourth season will be their last, which leaves me wondering why they didn’t bring back Reverend Johnny. I felt there was an unresolved tension about him, as if he had something important left unsaid.
Call David Green and Danny McBride and tell them to spin off.”
‘The Righteous Gemstones’ Comes to an End This Year
After much anticipation, the fourth and concluding season of HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones premiered on March 9, with its finale set for May 4. The fourth season has been receiving positive feedback, as the tale of the troubled family of televangelists nears its end, leaving fans eagerly awaiting the conclusion. Although this may mark the end for the show, creator Danny McMurray’s playful wish for a spin-off might not be entirely unrealistic.
There are numerous TV series that have come to an end, believing their stories were complete, but the unending thirst for content by streaming platforms has led some to resurface or continue with fresh narratives centered around particular characters. For instance, since its original series ended, The Walking Dead has spawned several successful spinoffs. Similarly, more spinoffs of The Big Bang Theory are on the horizon. Additionally, the universe created by Taylor Sheridan in Yellowstone is another noteworthy example.
If “The Righteous Gemstones” does proceed with a sequel, spinoff, or prequel, it appears that Mulroney is readily available to reprise his character. Simultaneously, he’s busy on “Chicago Fire,” where Dom Pascal faces the challenges of his life after his wife’s demise, and these events are expected to unfold throughout the remainder of the season. Although this season has seen a rocky start for Mulroney’s character, he would welcome the opportunity to continue portraying him in the future.
