The Bondsman: Hub Sworn to Lilith – Apocalypse Looms!

Warning: Spoilers for The Bondsman.

In essence, if Supernatural and Ash vs Evil Dead had a horror offspring, it would closely resemble Amazon’s latest series, The Bondman. Packed with blood, gore, and an abundance of demon folklore, Kevin Bacon flawlessly embodies Hub, a bounty hunter who is brought back from the underworld by none other than the Devil himself. Assigned to hunt and eliminate demons that have slipped out of eternal damnation, Hub finds himself in a precarious position when he’s compelled to grapple with the transgressions of his own past. Unbeknownst to him, the act that sent him to Hell would eventually return to torment him.

Regardless of his diligent attempts, Hub’s overconfidence often leads him astray. Instead of making up for past mistakes, he strives to outsmart the Devil and find a way around his Pot O’Gold agreement. By the end of Season 1, he succeeds in his quest, but soon realizes that those close to him will suffer the consequences. Although he is now free from the Devil’s grasp, his life and the lives of his loved ones are now controlled by Lilith, who has taken possession of someone dear to him.

Currently entangled in the midst of a fierce conflict between two malevolent forces in Hell, Hub has unknowingly aligned himself with another equally wicked being. To ensure his family’s safety, he is forced to swear loyalty to Lilith and her agenda. Regrettably, this decision will undoubtedly bring dire consequences for all humanity. As a result of Hub’s self-centered actions, both his family and the world at large find themselves in even greater peril than before. The grim outcome of such catastrophic proportions was not difficult to foresee, given that those around him had repeatedly warned about the repercussions of his selfish decisions.

How Does Lilith Escape Hell in ‘The Bondman’?

In every fresh instance of demonic possession, there was a human sacrifice arranged within a triangle shape. These triangles were strategically positioned to form a pentagram. When all five pentagrams were constructed, Lilith managed to ascend from the abyss of Hell and inhabit the corpse of Cheryl (Kathrine Barnes). This resurrection marked the last piece of the puzzle preceding Armageddon, and her choice to possess Cheryl was a strategic move aimed at controlling Hub. Regrettably, it proved effective.

A month prior to the series’ events, Hub makes a disastrous choice by deciding to kill Lucky (Damon Herriman). However, on one fateful night, he mistakenly shoots Cheryl instead. Instead of confessing his mistake and taking responsibility, he buries her in his backyard, letting everyone think she’s just gone missing. This action immediately condemns him to Hell, and it gives Lilith the power she needs to remain on Earth and bring about Armageddon. The human sacrifices and pentagram were the initial steps. Hub’s self-serving deal to release Lilith from her contract with the Devil, allowing Cheryl to live, was the final seal of his fate.

How Did Lilith End Up in Hell in the First Place?

Once an angel from Heaven named Lilith was deceived into aligning with Satan’s uprising against God due to envy towards her enchanting melodies among the celestial beings. This betrayal led to her banishment to Hell, stripping her of the ability to create music forever. It is speculated that she may be instigating Armageddon as retribution for her own suffering. However, it’s also known that the Devil holds a fascination for Lilith, and her patience appears to have worn thin with his manipulations. Her actions leading to the End of Days are driven by multiple factors.

Previously, she managed to break free from Satan’s grip. In retaliation against every man who dared confront her, she wreaked havoc. Her reign of terror was halted years ago when she was imprisoned within a powerful pentagram and returned to Hell. However, Hub and Midge (played by Jolene Purdy) attempted the same capture strategy as before, but this time Lilith cleverly manipulated Hub’s self-interest, allowing her to break free once more. Now, no longer confined by the depths of Hell, Lilith is on a rampage with a vengeance, placing not only Hub’s family, but all of humanity in grave danger as well.

What Does Maryanne’s Possession Mean for Humanity?

Thanks to Hub’s arrangement, Lilith requires a new vessel to inhabit. For now, Cheryl seems safe, but the fallen angel needs a new dwelling. Given Lilith’s strong affinity for music, it was likely apparent to all where she would eventually take over. Moreover, she still intends to manipulate Hub, and by possessing Maryanne (Jennifer Nettles), Hub will continue to comply with her orders. Blinded by love, perhaps, Hub’s narrow focus may stem from selflessness, but it also harbors selfishness, foreshadowing danger for all involved.

Following the acquisition of Maryanne, Lilith slays Lucky and prepares to exact retribution upon the town’s other men, leading up to Armageddon. She confides in Hub that the Devil will eternally pursue her, implying that the Devil will forever chase after Maryanne. As the credits approach, Lilith implores Hub to serve her so that Maryanne might survive. Although we don’t explicitly hear Hub’s reply, it’s quite likely that he has become a solider in Lilith’s crusade against the Devil. Here’s wishing that Season 2 makes its way onto our screens as soon as possible. The first season of The Bondsman is now available on Prime Video.
