In a change of scenery, Jesse Armstrong, creator of Succession, is trading New York City’s billionaires for those residing in the mountains for his upcoming HBO film titled Mountainhead. This eagerly anticipated project will debut on HBO on May 31 and can also be streamed on Max. With filming having commenced just in March and the cameras still rolling, it appears the team behind the movie is working tirelessly to ensure its release by that date. Production is expected to conclude this week.
Initially revealed images (viewable below) provide a tantalizing glimpse into Armstrong’s film, establishing a snowy, celeb-filled backdrop. The first image captures a luxurious mountain dwelling, standing alone amidst trees with a breathtaking vista. The second shot invites viewers to step inside the building where the movie’s principal characters huddle together, escaping the frosty weather outside. In stark contrast, the third picture portrays the four key figures in the story venturing out into the cold, clad in ski attire and sporting an intriguing variety of hats.
According to the official summary, Mountainhead features a gathering of wealthy companions amidst a global turmoil backdrop. The star-studded cast is headlined by Steve Carell portraying Randall, with Jason Schwartzman assuming the role of Souper/Hugo Van Yalk, Cory Michael Smith as Venis, and Ramy Youssef as Jeff. Additionally, Hadley Robinson appears as Hester, Andy Daly plays Casper, Ali Kinkade is Berry, Daniel Oreskes takes on Dr. Phipps, David Thompson portrays Leo, Ami MacKenzie acts as Janine, and Ava Kostia embodies Paula in supporting roles alongside the main four characters.
‘Mountainhead’ Marks Jesse Armstrong’s Feature Directorial Debut
The film “Mountainhead” is the work of director Armstrong, who is collaborating with Frank Rich, Lucy Prebble, Jon Brown, Tony Roche, Will Tracy, Mark Mylod, and Jill Footlick in a production role. This is Armstrong’s first full-length directorial project, following his experience with a few short films. It serves as his next project after the critically acclaimed series “Succession,” which concluded its four-season run in 2023, leaving a significant impact on the drama genre of the past decade for its exceptional writing, direction, and performances. Armstrong has expressed appreciation towards HBO for backing his upcoming production, stating that he is grateful for their support of his next on-screen endeavor.
I wonder if my time working alongside all those talented actors and directors on ‘Succession’ has had any positive impact on me. Fingers crossed it has. I’m deeply appreciative to Casey Bloys, Francesca Orsi, and the entire HBO team for their unwavering support of this project and for helping assemble a dream team for both cast and crew.
Besides its widespread praise, Succession garnered numerous awards and recognition on the award scene. It amassed 75 Emmy nominations and secured 19 wins, particularly excelling thrice in the Outstanding Drama Series category. Armstrong has pocketed seven Primetime Emmy Awards and was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for his work on the 2010 film In the Loop, a recognition he shared with Armando Iannucci and Tony Roche. We’ll see if Mountainhead adds another milestone to Armstrong’s impressive career trajectory.
