In contrasting terms, there are two categories of action stars from the ’80s and ’90s: those who no longer seek media attention and those who strive to maintain their A-list status, even if it means fighting till the end. The latter group continues to pursue major film productions, but these movies either receive unfavorable reviews from critics or fail to generate substantial revenue at the box office. Eventually, they moved into the direct-to-video market and found success there instead.
Prior to retiring, Bruce Willis became well-known in the B-movie sector much like Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal. Even in the later years of his professional life, he was incredibly productive. Remarkably, Willis produced an impressive 24 movies during the 2020s, with a significant number of these falling under his preferred genre – action. Noteworthy films from this period are essential viewing for any fan.

‘Hard Kill’ (2020)
The film, titled “Hard Kill“, centers around tech whiz Eva Chambers, played by Lala Kent, who finds herself in danger when she’s abducted by a ruthless extremist called the Pardoner. Despite the intense pressure, Eva’s father, Donovan (Bruce Willis), enlists a squad of skilled operatives, under the command of dependable leader Derek Miller (Jesse Metcalfe), to save her and secure a vital technological asset she possesses.
Family Is Off Limits
In a compelling, edge-of-your-seat action thriller, the traditional bond between father and daughter is juxtaposed against the larger issue of technology misuse. This twist lends an extra layer of intrigue to an already intense storyline. Jesse Metcalfe delivers a convincing performance as one of today’s top action stars, while Bruce Willis continues to impress with his finesse. Sergio Rizzuto and Tyler Jon Olson also shine in their unsympathetic roles. Despite knowing the outcome, you’ll be captivated by this gripping portrayal of ruthlessness and avarice.

‘Cosmic Sin’ (2021)
In the year 2524, humankind has settled on numerous planets, a fact that leads us to Cosmic Sin. Here, we find ourselves in the role of General James Ford (Willis), summoned to resolve a crisis as a band of hostile extraterrestrial beings assaults an isolated planet. However, this time, the danger is immense, and if not tackled skillfully, it could escalate into a devastating interstellar conflict.
Interstellar Stakes
The space-themed film starring Bruce Willis, titled Cosmic Sin, may not be as well-known, but it’s just as captivating as his ’90s sci-fi works. It’s engaging primarily because it moves quickly, offers sharp dialogue, and is meticulously detailed, boasting a spectacular, blockbuster aesthetic. Keep an eye out for Frank Grillo portraying a tough general and CJ Perry of WWE as a skilled sniper. Most importantly, the surprising twist at the end will leave you speechless.

‘American Siege’ (2022)
At the outset of “American Siege”, Roy (Rob Gough), having spent a decade behind bars, remains resentful for being accused of his girlfriend’s disappearance. Consequently, he seizes a pharmacist whom he thinks can provide him with the information he needs. This act prompts the heavily-drinking Sheriff Ben Watts (Willis) to step in and take action.
Who Did It?
In this captivating tale about a missing girl, there’s an unexpected turn that’s worth the wait, so be patient. The picturesque small-town setting will give you a delightful experience beyond your expectations.
In this production, Willis seems to take a more passive role, which could be beneficial as it gives other actors a chance to shine brightly. This intriguing dynamic leaves viewers eager to learn more about the cast members, making them want to check out their Wikipedia pages.

‘Midnight in the Switchgrass’ (2021)
Under the shadows of the notorious “Truck Stop Killer” case, Midnight in the Switchgrass revolves around FBI Agent Karl Helter’s (Bruce Willis) probe into a sinister sex trafficking network. However, the stakes escalate dramatically when the killer abducts Helter’s partner, Agent Lombardo (Megan Fox). Now, it falls upon Helter and other law enforcement personnel to act swiftly and decisively to rescue her before time runs out.
Deliver Us From Evil
Megan Fox has been delivering outstanding performances lately, and in “Midnight in the Switchgrass,” she demonstrates she could easily headline a police drama. Despite Willis’ performance being largely routine here, even Willis on autopilot outshines many others. Remarkably, the director successfully crafts this tale to be more chilling than the true story of the serial killer.
6
‘Apex’ (2021)
In Apex, former lawman Thomas Malone (Bruce Willis) finds himself imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit. He is given the chance to regain his freedom by taking part in a dangerous game on an island where wealthy individuals hunt humans as prey. Aware that he will have an opportunity to reverse roles at some point, he accepts.
One of the Best Villains in a Bruce Willis Movie
As a cinephile, I must say that this under-the-radar flick primarily delivers on the adrenaline rush from its dynamic cat-and-mouse game between the protagonists and antagonists. Yet, it certainly doesn’t skimp on the outstanding portrayal by Neal McDonough, who never disappoints as a formidable adversary. You might recognize him from his captivating role in “Tulsa King,” but trust me, he steals the show here with a chilling performance that rivals some of the most iconic movie villains. It’s truly unfortunate that he doesn’t get more screen time in major Hollywood productions.
5
‘Survive the Night’ (2020)
In the thriller “Survive the Night,” character Rich (Chad Michael Murray) is dealing with quite a few troubles. His professional life isn’t progressing as planned, and his marriage seems to be on rocky ground. However, things take a turn for the worse when two nefarious brothers invade his home, compelling him to operate on one of them. Fortunately, Rich’s father, Frank (Bruce Willis), who is a former sheriff, happens to be present in the house at that moment.
Daddy to the Rescue
By emphasizing the heartfelt connections that hold family members together amid stressful situations and avoiding any moments of cowardice, this action movie stands out from many others primarily confined to a single setting. Murray and Willis brilliantly portray ordinary individuals with remarkable determination, and their captivating performances serve as the film’s strong foundation. The other actors are equally convincing, so sit back and let Dad handle things.

‘Detective Knight: Independence’ (2023)
In “Detective Knight: Independence,” the renowned detective James Knight (Bruce Willis) encounters a significant hurdle. A former military medic turned vigilante aims at rooting out corruption. As Knight’s duty is to apprehend this individual, he finds himself grappling with his beliefs regarding justice and vengeance.
Good, Old-Fashioned Mayhem
This gripping story with a moral undertone presents both criticism and praise towards police work and the judicial system. Essentially, it’s as if Bruce Willis starred in a Die Hard-esque film. The action scenes are well-executed, and the dialogue is improved compared to his recent films. What stands out most is its simplicity, making it ideal for those who dislike intricate plot twists.
3
‘Gasoline Alley’ (2022)
As a cinephile, I find myself captivated by the gritty world of “Gasoline Alley.” In this film, I, as Detective Bill Freeman (Bruce Willis), am delving into a chilling series of murders involving sex workers. My investigative efforts are centered around a suspicious tattoo parlor owner, given that a lighter bearing his studio’s mark was discovered at the crime scene. Yet, I must confess, my intentions aren’t as pure as they seem. Freeman is no saint; he’s as tainted as the underbelly of the city he’s sworn to protect.
Willis Looks Good as a Villain
1. In Gasoline Alley, a palpable tension fills the air and it delivers a powerful punch when exploring the harrowing crimes that rule the criminal underworld.
2. Bruce Willis has taken on morally ambiguous characters in the past, but never has he been quite as menacing. Such a role typically makes an actor less endearing, but who could ever dislike Bruce Willis? Despite the grim nature of the characters, the film is visually appealing, particularly during our trip to Tijuana.
2
‘Detective Knight: Rogue’ (2022)
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but immerse myself in the gripping tale of “Detective Knight: Rogue.” In this thrilling adventure, I find myself following the relentless pursuit of Detective James Knight (Bruce Willis), an officer with the LAPD. When a group of ruthless robbers targeted his partner, Knight took it personally and vowed to bring them to justice. This chase leads him from the bustling streets of Los Angeles to the vibrant cityscape of New York, where complications abound. To make matters worse, long-buried demons from his past resurface, adding an extra layer of difficulty to his mission. Will he manage to unravel the mystery and overcome his personal struggles? The suspense is killing me!
Turning All Stones
In a nutshell, Bruce Willis portrays a character that’s sharp and cunning, reminiscent of an animated version of Burt Lancaster. The actor’s charm lies in his smirks and he always exudes an air of confidence.
The movie is filled with intriguing conflicts and clever banter. It proudly stands out as a dynamic, thrilling addition to the action star’s recent collection.
1
‘Detective Knight: Redemption’ (2022)
In “Detective Knight: Redemption,” Detective James Knight finds himself in a place no officer desires to be – confined within prison walls. The repercussions of his past actions seem to have sealed his destiny, but brighter days are on the horizon. As an extremist group begins wreaking havoc across the city, Knight is unexpectedly released from prison to confront them. However, deceit and shadowy figures will complicate the mission more than he anticipated.
Die Hard Lite
At Christmas time, Redemption is reminiscent of Die Hard, and it’s almost as impressive as that movie. In his post-2010s career, Willis delivers an exceptional performance that may very well be his best yet. His agent ought to have advised him to make more holiday movies because he clearly enjoys spreading cheer. This film, in particular, demonstrates a remarkable understanding and insight into obsessive madness. Lochlyn Munro nearly outshines Willis with his performance. Out of all the movies on this list, watch this one first; it’s a gripping action movie that explores the blurry line between mission success and failure.
