Prior to the scheduled release of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” in 2025, Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie visited CinemaCon to offer a sneak peek at the film and honor the filmmaker with an award. During the event, Cruise delivered a speech while presenting his fellow cast member with the Director of the Year award from CinemaCon. To cap off the celebrations, Jeremy Renner, another member of the “M:I” family, added to the special moment by responding to the tribute with a heartfelt message.
Along with showing a trailer for the highly anticipated M:I 8 during Paramount’s panel at CinemaCon, Cruise got to honor his friend. During this special occasion for his longtime collaborator, the Top Gun star spoke at length about their partnership while sharing thoughtful remarks about McQuarrie’s skill as an artist. In a clip posted to his Instagram, the Ethan Hunt actor said:
Christopher McQuarrie, known as McQ, is not just a friend but also my creative partner and an exceptional director of the year. He is a masterful artist who stands alongside legends, much like the modern-day Thalberg. He brings value to every artist, studio, and worldwide audience that he works with.
Apart from posting a snippet of his speech online, the actor who played Jerry Maguire also uploaded pictures featuring him and the movie director from the gathering, as well as a photo of McQuarrie directing one of the Mission films. It’s evident that they have a strong bond, since they have collaborated for many years on projects. Although The Final Reckoning might be the last film in the Mission series, it seems their partnership may continue beyond this point.
The affection for the Instagram post grew as numerous fans and acquaintances commented, voicing their encouragement for the duo and “M:I – 8”. Among these commentators was Jeremy Renner, who starred in two Mission: Impossible movies, including “Rogue Nation”, which was helmed by McQuarrie. He stated:
Miss you fine gents.
As a dedicated fan, I must admit it’s been quite some time since Renner graced the screens in a “Mission” film, last seen in 2015’s “Rogue Nation”. Yet, the charismatic star of “Avengers” has expressed his readiness to rejoin the franchise. His reluctance to be part of “Fallout” was due to the initial plans to write off his character, demonstrating his deep-rooted affection for continuing the journey.
Although he’s not currently listed as part of the “Final Reckoning” cast, surprise appearances are common, so who knows? He’s expressed his longing for both Cruise and McQuarrie, leading some to speculate that this could be a hint for them to collaborate on a project, regardless of whether it falls within the realm of the IMF. In my opinion, it would be fantastic if they reunited and produced another masterpiece together.
In the cinemas on May 23, 2025, you’ll find Tom Cruise in Christopher McQuarrie’s film “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.” You can also catch up with earlier Mission movies like “Rogue Nation” by streaming them right now if you have a Paramount+ subscription. As for me, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for another mission that Cruise, along with Renner, might decide to take on in the future.
