A few years back, right here at TopMob, I started penning tales about a then-unverified whisper of a new theme park, the Epic Universe, at Universal Orlando Resort. Despite doubts and pandemic hold-ups, as well as my personal skepticism that it might never materialize, the long-awaited park is almost ready to open. I’m thrilled to have been proven wrong!
On May 22, Epic Universe will officially welcome the public, but over the weekend, I was privileged to join an exclusive VIP tour of this brand-new theme park. I experienced every ride, attended every performance, and covered almost every square inch of the new attraction. Despite my expectations, what I believed would be my favorite aspects and what truly captured my heart turned out to be quite different.
Dark Universe Is As Incredible As I Hoped
A significant portion of excitement, much of it generated by Universal itself, centered around Monsters: Unchained – The Frankenstein Experiment, which was the main attraction in the Dark Universe dedicated to classic movie monsters. Given my love for classic films and the information available about Epic Universe, I had high hopes that this land and its ride would be my favorite parts of visiting Epic Universe.
In the realm of Dark Universe, you’ll find some captivating attractions. One such spot is the Burning Blade Tavern, which occasionally flares up, adding an intriguing touch, though it might be more striking at night than during the day. The land appears worn and damaged, much like a village devastated by beastly attacks, yet there’s a charm in its decay. The landscape also houses various characters, such as the Invisible Man, along with townsfolk who stroll about and engage with visitors.
In the promotion, Monsters Unchained is described as an extraordinary dark ride that truly delivers. The animatronics presented are nothing short of amazing, with some being colossal in size – among the largest I’ve ever encountered that actually work (I must apologize to Expedition Everest’s Yeti). The pre-show itself is a standout attraction, featuring animatronics that surpass those on the ride itself in quality.
While Monsters Unchained is excellent, I believe another dark ride surpasses it in my opinion.

Ministry of Magic Edges Out The Frankenstein Experiment As The Top Ride At Epic Universe
At Universal Orlando Resort, you’d be hard-pressed not to stumble upon a Harry Potter attraction. Being someone who isn’t deeply invested in Harry Potter, this abundance is somewhat challenging for me. I enjoy Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure as a ride, but the other Harry Potter experiences in Orlando don’t make a strong impression on me. Since the story and characters aren’t particularly important to me, it’s not a significant setback.
However, it’s important to note that I, being a non-Harry Potter enthusiast, am captivated by every aspect of the Wizarding World, with the Ministry of Magic standing out as exceptional. The Ministry of Magic attraction, in particular, is my favorite ride within the park, offering an extraordinary experience.
1) Just gazing at the queue left me spellbound, and it was even more breathtaking once I hopped onto the ride itself. Cinema enthusiasts would instantly recognize the grandeur of the Ministry of Magic’s main hall, meticulously recreated to appear as if it leapt off the silver screen (and in lifesize proportions). As you navigate through the space, you’ll find yourself transitioning between various rooms filled with distinct decorations, animatronics, and intricate details that will captivate guests while they patiently wait.
Visitors experience a journey through the Magical Menagerie (MoM) where they witness the trial of Delores Umbridge, portrayed by Imelda Staunton who reprises her film role. The narrative unfolds using a blend of live action and animatronics, occasionally making it challenging to distinguish between the two.
During the initial battle scene involving Harry, Ron, and Hermione against the Death Eaters, I initially thought the foreground figure was merely a screen prop. However, upon closer observation, I realized they were physically present, synchronizing with the on-screen action. For a moment, it crossed my mind that a real actor might be performing the role due to the fluidity of their movements. But, of course, that wasn’t the case; instead, it was an animatronic device bringing the character to life.
Towards the closing scenes, there’s a minor hiccup as real characters like Umbrdige, Harry, Ron, and Hermione are replaced by animatronic counterparts, which were previously unseen on screen. This method of facial projection, criticized in recent Disney productions, is employed here but still falls short of perfection.
Despite a slight reduction in intensity, the Ministry of Magic remains an exceptional and unforgettable adventure within the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Furthermore, this is just one of many outstanding activities that await you in this magical realm.

Epic Universe’s Live Shows Are The Highlight Of The Park
In the Wizarding World, another captivating spectacle is Le Cirque Arcanus – a stage production blending real performers with puppeteers. The ringmaster of this circus has made off with Newt Scamander’s magical suitcase and intends to fill it with his magical creatures. An employee accidentally enters the case and encounters several of these creatures, which have been given life through diverse methods.
Visiting the circus at Epic Universe is an absolute must for anyone, even if the “Fantastic Beasts” films didn’t quite captivate audiences in movie theaters. The puppets and shows there are nothing short of breathtaking beauty.
At Epic Universe, there’s another captivating stage performance that surpasses even the enchantment of the Wizarding World. This one is called The Untrainable Dragon, housed within How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk. Not only does it feature live entertainment and stunning puppetry, but what sets it apart is the breathtaking spectacle of the puppets soaring through the air, flitting about the room before gracefully descending onto the stage.
Additionally, I wouldn’t categorize myself as a diehard fan of “How to Train Your Dragon,” yet this series has piqued my interest so much that I’m inclined to rewatch the animated movies or perhaps anticipate the release of the live-action remake.
It’s fantastic to witness Epic Universe thrive with its live entertainment offerings, a strategy others might benefit from studying.

Epic Universe Is As Epic as The Name Entails
Despite some aspects taking me aback as standout favorites, overall, everything left me awestruck to varying extents. Nothing I witnessed or participated in was unworthy of recommendation; it was all enjoyable and enriching. In essence, it was all a delight to experience.
The anticipation for Epic Universe is running high, and rightfully so. It’s been 25 years since a theme park like this has graced the world, which explains much of the excitement. Yet, it’s essential to remember that if you enter the park with expectations of everything being the absolute best, you might find yourself feeling let down.
Epic Universe isn’t so much a groundbreaking revolution in the themed entertainment sphere; instead, it represents a thoughtful and essential evolution of this medium. Universal has taken the time to study what has been successful and unsuccessful in their own parks as well as those of others. As a result, they’ve created a new park that caters to diverse tastes, ensuring that there is likely to be something appealing everywhere you look.
My stint at Epic Universe was regrettably short. For every experience I had, there were others I had to forgo, which I’ll revisit once it formally launches. I eagerly anticipate my future visit so I can savor everything at a more leisurely pace. However, when I decide to explore an attraction, I already know where I’ll be heading first.
