Throughout Season 2 of “1923”, events gradually built up towards the climax in the finale titled “A Dream and a Memory”. Following the significant loss of life in Episode 6, it seemed clear that the following sequence would only bring more violence and sorrow. However, the last episode of the second season did not fail to deliver, offering some heartwarming reunions, enlightening revelations, and even moments filled with unexpected hope.
In the final episode of 1923, most storylines intersected in Montana, but Teonna Rainwater’s (Aminah Nieves) outcome remained unclear. The journey home of Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) and the fate of his spouse, Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer), were disclosed. Meanwhile, the Duttons’ continuous efforts to fend off intruders gained a new ally in Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn), a man who confessed to wrestling with all he had done for Whitfield.
Ultimately, the narrative of “1923” beautifully encapsulated the Dutton family’s saga. The dream represented their determination to persevere, while the memories signified the loved ones and aspects of life they had to leave behind during their journey.
Spencer Dutton and Alexandra Finally Reunite
As Spencer Dutton’s train journey home went on, Alexandra made every effort to survive and stay warm in the vehicle she was in amidst the harsh wilderness of Montana. Utilizing Paul’s lighter, Alexandra ignited a fire within the car. However, as she began burning the letters she and Spencer had exchanged, she heard the train drawing near. In the end, she set the car ablaze, and as the train passed by, Spencer spotted her. He leapt off the moving train to save her, carrying her both to the safety of the train and a doctor’s care.
As Spencer and Alexandra embarked on their train journey to Livingston, it was evident that Alexandra’s state was quite serious. Although Spencer knew she was pregnant, the severity of her frostbite on hands and feet was alarming. Previously, Alexandra had confided in Spencer about her pregnancy. The doctor offered hope that the baby might live due to the miracles of a woman’s body. Consequently, they decided to head towards Bozeman to admit Alexandra into a hospital.
As the train neared Livingston, Spencer noticed a large number of men assembled there and an assortment of weapons ready for him. He faced a crucial choice – whether to remain with his pregnant wife or protect his family. He chose to send Alexandra on ahead, only to discover later in Bozeman that she had given birth to their premature son, John.
Alexandra chose not to undergo the amputation procedure for her feet and a hand, preferring to spend time with her kid instead. She’s aware of her impending demise, as is Jacob.
When Spencer gets home, he climbs into bed with his wife and son for a family sleepover. However, upon waking up, he discovers that his wife Alexandra has passed away. He contacts Cara Dutton, played by Helen Mirren, and embarks on a mission to avenge his wife’s death alongside his uncle Jacob Dutton, portrayed by Harrison Ford. They set out to track down Donald Whitfield, the man believed to be responsible for her demise.
Banner Creighton Gives His Family a New Life
Teonna Rainwater Searches To Find Hers
In the story “A Dream and a Memory,” Donald Whitfield and his companion Lindy aren’t heavily featured, yet they make brief appearances to emphasize their wickedness. The character who distinguishes Whitfield from Jacob Dutton is Banner Creighton, who points out that Whitfield deliberately inflicts pain upon others. As the events unfold, Creighton chooses to take his wife and child to the train station en route to Portland, seeking to distance himself from his wrongdoings. Upon seeing Creighton at the station, Jacob labels him a coward but eventually allows Creighton’s wife and child to leave when it becomes clear that violence is imminent.
In their struggle with their respective pasts, Creighton and Teonna Rainwater confronted their own ghosts. Marshal Fossett (Jennifer Carpenter) and her team in Oklahoma discovered the remains of Marshals Kent (Jamie McShane) and Pete Plenty Clouds (Jeremy Guana). They pieced together the events, noticed the smoke in the distance from Teonna’s fire, and set off towards it. Upon arrival at the campsite, they found Runs His Horse (Michael Spears) and Father Renaud (Sebastian Roche) deceased. As they began to understand what had taken place, a glint from Teonna’s gun led them on her trail.
Marshal Fossett and her team manage to locate Teonna, however, one of the deputies tragically perishes during the pursuit. Teonna confesses that she is a murderer, revealing that she acted in self-defense against those who had raped and brutally assaulted her. Fossett and her team were oblivious to Teonna’s background, as the concept of Indian Schools was alien to them. Fossett and her deputy apprehend Teonna, but fail to disclose any pertinent information to the judge presiding over her case that could have led to charges being upheld. As a result, Teonna is released, but when it becomes apparent that she has no place to go, Fossett’s associate provides her with a horse, a firearm, and guidance to venture westward.
The Shootout at the Dutton Ranch Ushers in the Next Generation
In the novel “A Dream and a Memory,” the Dutton ranch is under constant attack. Zane Davis (Brian Geraghty), Cara, Elizabeth (Michelle Randolph), and everyone else put up a brave fight against the forces sent by Whitfield with the intention of wiping them out. After a daytime gunfight fails to yield results for the attackers, they withdraw and wait for darkness to fall.
Simultaneously, Jacob, Sheriff McDowell (Robert Patrick), Creighton, and a multitude of men from both sides of the conflict stand by as they await the arrival of the train at Livingston. Upon its arrival, a hail of gunfire on the platform inflicts numerous casualties or fatalities. McDowell gets wounded, Spencer engages in heavy shooting, and Jacob reopens an old wound. Creighton manages to shield Jacob from further harm before McDowell can shoot him, but before he succumbs to his injuries, Jacob swears to Creighton yet again that he will protect his family.
Meanwhile, Spencer departs from the train station en route to the Dutton ranch, with Jacob and Alexandra still aboard the train. As night falls, Spencer returns home where Cara welcomes him. Simultaneously, Spencer and his companions take out their adversaries, eventually reaching the house. Overjoyed at reuniting, Spencer and Cara decide to travel to Bozeman next. However, Elizabeth inquires about Jack’s whereabouts. Upon investigation, they discover Jack’s lifeless body.
In the hospital at Bozeman, Spencer leaves Cara outside his son’s room while he goes to see him. Meanwhile, Cara chats with Jacob about Alexandra, expressing curiosity about her. Jacob responds by saying that Alexandra shares a lot of similarities with Cara herself. Afterward, Cara starts making arrangements for raising the baby. The following morning, Spencer discovers his wife dead and joins forces with Jacob to hunt down Whitfield. They reach Whitfield’s estate, confront him, shoot him, and also kill Lindy. However, they let Mabel escape. Whitfield begs Jacob to take him into custody due to his position as a law-abiding man, but Spencer insists that Whitfield say Cara’s name before ending his life by shooting him in the head.
Ending on a Dream and a Memory
At the very end of the 1923 finale, Jack and Alex’s funeral takes place, followed by Elizabeth leaving Montana. Cara tells Elizabeth that she will eventually let go of her feelings for Jack, while Spencer cannot forget about Alexandra. After Jacob retires and passes the ranch to his nephew, the narrator, Elsa Dutton, discloses that Spencer never remarried but had another child with a widow, implying he continued to honor Alexandra in this way.
After living for an additional 45 years, any missing memories of Alexandra that Spencer had were filled in by dreams. As the story concludes, Spencer and Alexandra are seen dancing together in one of these dreams, or maybe it was a glimpse of paradise.
