73-year-old Jay North, best known for his role as the impish character with the distinctive blond tuft on the hit CBS sitcom “Dennis the Menace” (1959-63), has passed away.
North passed away at his residence in Lake Butler, Florida, on Sunday, following a long struggle with colon cancer. This information was shared by Jeannie Russell, who portrayed Margaret Wade on his show, with The Hollywood Reporter. She referred to him as her “unusual sibling.
In the television series “Dennis the Menace” produced by On Screen Gems, which is based on the comic strip by Hank Ketcham, North portrayed Dennis Mitchell, a good-hearted but mischievous only child of Henry (Herbert Anderson) and Alice (Gloria Henry). Frequently causing mayhem for his elderly neighbor George Wilson and later his brother John Wilson (Gale Gordon), played by the actor.
After Joseph Kearns’s passing in 1962, they called upon Gordon to step into the role of George that he had been playing.
At six years old, North made his debut audition for the show titled “Dennis“. He was eight when it premiered in October 1959, and by the time of its cancellation after four seasons, he was nearly twelve. Yet, due to reruns and syndication, he would become a familiar face to millions of viewers throughout the years.
In a 1993 interview, North said he was not unhappy to see Dennis the Menace come to an end.
With the demands of my job and Joe’s passing, I transformed into a somber, melancholic, and reclusive individual, quite unlike the carefree child character I portrayed on the TV series,” he explained.
Later, North appeared as a mischievous child character in the 1965 MGM film titled “Zebra in the Kitchen“, which was directed by Ivan Tors. He shared the screen with Clint Walker in the adventure movie “Maya” (1966), another production of MGM, set in India.
In 1967-68, he went back to work on the “Maya” series for NBC, and he found it to be an incredibly fulfilling experience, as he put it.
Born an only kid in sunny LA on August 3, 1951, I grew up with my mom, Dorothy, who worked tirelessly as a secretary for AFTRA. My dad, also named Jay, left us when I was just four, and our paths never crossed again.
North made an appearance on the L.A. children’s TV show, “Cartoon Express,” thanks to his mother. It was during this stint that he caught the eye of talent agent Hazel MacMillan. She then secured roles for him in various shows such as “Wanted: Dead or Alive,” “77 Sunset Strip,” and “Sugarfoot.” Eventually, he landed the role in “Dennis the Menace,” with his hair dyed platinum blonde from its original reddish hue.
During its run, North played Dennis on “The Donna Reed Show” and “The Red Skelton Hour,” as well as appearing in the 1960 musical comedy film “Pépé,” alongside Cantinflas.
North made appearances on “The Donna Reed Show”, “The Red Skelton Hour”, and the 1960 film “Pépé” (starring Cantinflas) while the show was still airing.
Following the “Maya” series, North completed his education at Rexford Senior High School in Beverly Hills in 1969. Subsequently, he worked as a voice actor for children’s shows like “The Banana Splits Adventure Hour” and “The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show”.
1974 saw him appearing in the adult-themed suspense film titled “The Teacher“, alongside Angel Tompkins, followed by his tenure in the U.S. Navy. Unfortunately, in 1988, he found himself as a subject of a false news report claiming his demise in a medical clinic.
