Robert Downey Jr. Reveals the Secret Tattoo Order Among the Avengers Cast!

Instead of finishing the original Avengers movie with a shawarma feast, the cast actually had an even more grand celebration after wrapping up one film. For quite some time now, there have been stories circulating about the cast’s coordinated tattoos, particularly focusing on the fact that one of the original six actors, Mark Ruffalo, resisted getting inked. Interestingly enough, it was Robert Downey Jr. who shared the details behind this event, even shedding light on Ruffalo’s last-minute change of heart regarding the tattoos.

During an interview with Wired, the actor known for playing Iron Man was asked about his tattoos. Given Robert Downey Jr.’s open nature, it didn’t surprise me that he freely shared the details. Additionally, he couldn’t resist poking fun at his pal, Mark Ruffalo, for choosing not to get inked.

The evening of Infinity War’s premiere was when the events unfolded. Scarlett Winslow was first, followed by Chris Evans, then myself, then Jeremy Renner, and eventually Chris Hemsworth, despite his initial hesitation and dramatic reaction to the pain. Lastly, Mark Ruffalo declared, ‘I refuse that tattoo. I don’t want to participate in your Hollywood inner circle.’ To which I gave a round of applause.

Given that Robert Downey Jr. is known for his wit and humor, it’s likely that his apparent sincerity at the end was actually a sarcastic remark. He often enjoys delivering shocking or humorous lines, as evident by his “Fuck You, Mark” comment directed at the camera after praising the actor from Dark Waters.

It’s clear that he isn’t serious about getting a tattoo, as evidenced by the close bond between the original Avengers stars. They even have a group chat where jokes about getting matching tattoos circulate. Jeremy Renner shared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon that he made an effort to convince Mark Ruffalo to participate in this joke, but when it came time for the real thing, Ruffalo backed out, according to Renner. When Ruffalo himself appeared on The Tonight Show, he admitted his fear of needles and also saw a kind of rebellious coolness in being the only one without tattoos among the group.

It seems more effective if Mark Ruffalo had been the first to get inked, considering Chris Hemsworth might’ve reacted too dramatically to his own tattoo session, which could have swayed opinions in that debate. However, I can understand why they chose the current order. Scarlett Johansson has demonstrated her badass persona both on and off screen, and Chris Evans became viral years ago when he accidentally revealed tattoos on his chest and torso during interviews. Moreover, Jeremy Renner and Robert Downey Jr. also have other tattoos.

There’s still a chance for Ruffalo to earn his official Avengers badge within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), given that characters’ tales often continue, especially with the infinite potential of the multiverse. For instance, even though Iron Man, played by Robert Downey Jr., seemingly perished in Avengers: Endgame, he’s coming back to the MCU as Doctor Doom in upcoming films like Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. While these movies promise to be massive, it remains unclear if the Russo Brothers could surpass the legendary original Avengers assembly scene when they return to the MCU.

Maybe if Mark Ruffalo appears again in future Marvel films, he might consider getting the tattoo, although it wouldn’t have quite the same impact without some of his long-term friends. Whether or not he gets inked, Ruffalo deserves recognition for being one of the original six Avengers actors, and I appreciate that they all continue to share a special bond. You can witness their on-screen camaraderie by streaming MCU films with a Disney+ subscription.
