Bella Ramsey Teases Heartbreaking Changes for Joel and Ellie in Last of Us Season 2

Among the highly anticipated TV series set to debut in 2025, I find myself increasingly convinced that “The Last of Us” Season 2 will offer a profoundly emotional viewing journey this year (fingers crossed, it might even rival the heart-wrenching climax of “Severance”). As the release date approaches, my anticipation heightens, especially as the co-creators and talented actors like Bella Ramsey share tantalizing glimpses into the lives of Joel and Ellie.

Previously, Ramsey discussed their approach to filming some of the most heartrending scenes ahead, but their recent statement about Ellie and Joel’s strained relationship may not lessen the emotional turmoil viewers will experience. During an appearance at the Deadline’s Contenders TV panel for ‘The Last of Us’, Ramsey shared insights on where the beloved duo’s relationship stands after a five-year time leap.

There’s no denying Ellie harbors some uncertainty regarding Joel’s lie from Season 1, which significantly impacts their bond. It’s tough pretending to be distant from him… it’s definitely heartbreaking. And as the story unfolds, things will only grow more somber and chilly… so brace yourselves for that emotional journey.

It’s clear that there will be numerous flashbacks revealing key events from the past five years, but I can’t help feeling disappointed about when Ellie will uncover the truth and confront Joel for his deceit regarding the Seattle hospital incident. “You lied!” isn’t a phrase one typically uses when eager to forgive with only a small amount of anger lingering.

More From The Last Of Us

1. – I recently rewatched The Last of Us before Season 2, and it’s astonishing which death affected me the most this time around

2. – The Executive Producer explains why Season 2 presents Abby’s backstory differently, and honestly, I think it’s a reasonable choice

3. – It’s amazing to learn that Kaitlyn Dever nearly played Ellie in The Last of Us movie, and even more shocking is the amount of spoilers she learned years before joining the show

Based on Bella Ramsey acknowledging the challenge of portraying Ellie’s coldness towards Joel, it gives me a convincing reason to compile a montage focusing on the brief instances of warmth and empathy exchanged between Joel and Ellie throughout Season 1. This, in turn, might motivate me to create similar montages featuring their heartwarming scenes from the original video games, as there are more such moments available in the source material.

Bella Ramsey Addresses How Ellie Has Changed During The Time Jump

Although Ellie experiences a significant deterioration in her relationship with Joel after the traumatic events of Season 1, she fortunately discovers a new source of emotional support in Dina, played by Isabela Merced. This character will become Ellie’s love interest and is expected to play a crucial role in introducing spores for the narrative of Season 2. Despite these changes, Bella Ramsey discussed how Ellie’s harrowing survival journey transformed her as a character overall.

In Season 2, I desired to experience her weight a tad more intensely. To me, she seems somewhat tougher, reminiscent of Joel in certain ways… yet she remains the same individual, retaining her unique sense of humor.

It’s disheartening to realize that she seems to share Joel’s cynicism and weariness as their distance expands. And it would break my heart if she ever loses her love for cheesy puns and jokes, but thankfully that aspect of her remains unchanged.

Bella Ramsey underwent significant transformations between seasons, and prior to the start of Season 2, they shared that they had been diagnosed with autism and recovered from an eating disorder. Here’s hoping that their portrayal of emotional distress for their character was not influenced by personal struggles when the production ended.

The second season of “The Last of Us” will officially debut on April 13 at 9:00 p.m., available to stream for those who have an HBO or Max subscription.
