Suits LA Episode 7: Last Trial, Weak Plot, and John Amos Tribute

The first season of the series titled “Suits LA” is nearing its end. Since Lester’s trial has concluded, Episode 7 aimed to provide a significant climax that would continue captivating fans of this spinoff. However, “Good Times” fell short in delivering this impact. The episode did present an emotional tribute to John Amos, a late actor, but the remainder of the episode was disorganized with underdeveloped storylines and no clear direction as to where the show may head next. With no confirmation on renewal, “Suits LA” needs to enhance its quality to maintain viewer engagement.

Episode 7 Pays Tribute to the Late John Amos

In the very first episode of Suits, set in Los Angeles, Ted and Rick collaborated with actor John Amos in an attempt to secure an audition. Sadly, Amos passed away on August 21, 2024, before the episode aired. The show chose to tackle this in Episode 7 instead. As Ted and Rick attend their office meetings, they learn about Amos’s demise.

To pay tribute to Amos, Ted and Rick decided to grab some drinks together. Amos was Ted’s initial client and the first one he introduced to Rick, making him quite significant to the lawyers. After getting tipsy, as they exited the bar, Rick stumbled upon a Hollywood Walk of Fame star. He joked to Ted that despite over 2,000 stars, John Amos doesn’t have one. In his inebriated state, Rick even texted Erica, asking her out on a date.

The following day, Ted and Rick confer with a board representative from the Hollywood Walk of Fame. They successfully persuade the board member to grant John Amos a star; however, it won’t be installed for another two years. Ted becomes frustrated, and the board member counters that stars for notables such as Denzel Washington and Beyoncé are yet to be placed. Ted again uses his influence by mentioning Denzel as his client and suggesting that Amos paved the way for the success Denzel enjoys today, particularly in terms of Black America’s representation in the industry.

Following the meeting, Rick engages in conversation with Ted. Rick informs him that the board member will take on a significant role in two years, but Ted isn’t satisfied with this timeline and angrily urges Rick to work harder for his clients. Later, Ted calls Rick and offers an apology, explaining that he had just visited his dying father, Amos, who advised him to forgive his father. Amos also cautioned Ted about the lawyer forming a harmful relationship with Rick and Stuart. Given Ted’s recent outbursts and apologies, it would be beneficial for an upcoming storyline to have the lawyer seek therapy.

In a nod to the late John Amos, episode 7 of Suits LA is titled after his famous show, Good Times. This classic sitcom, produced by Norman Lear, centered around a struggling family in Chicago and served as a major career boost for John Amos, who portrayed the father. Back in the main office, Ted and Kevin find themselves engrossed in an episode of Good Times. Meanwhile, Rick sends a text to Erica inviting her to watch the same show in another office, where Stuart joins them. As the credits roll, the iconic theme song of Good Times plays softly in the background.

Stick to a Few Good Subplots, Please

Despite the heartfelt tribute for John Amos, the remainder of the episode is quite disorganized, with each character receiving their own storyline that isn’t fully developed. The narrative begins during staff meetings, where Stuart announs that he’ll be meeting a client named David Bowie, causing a stir among employees who start discussing the musician. However, it’s important to note that Stuart is not actually meeting with the musician, but rather another individual named Bowie who has been harmful to the studio whistleblowers. This Bowie asks Stuart to leverage Samantha’s reputation, and when Stuart consults Samantha about this, she declines. Stuart becomes upset, but it’s more due to his recent hurt feelings from Ted rather than any genuine concern over Samantha’s involvement.

At Ted’s workplace, Kevin is about to depart for New York. Before he leaves, Erica requests his assistance in locating one of her mother’s old friends as a birthday present. Kevin manages to find the person and even meets Erica’s mother at the office. Later, when Erica and her mother go out for dinner, Erica’s mother mentions that Kevin is grieving and needs some positivity in his life. Erica then proposes a job offer in LA, but Kevin declines. Instead, he expresses his intention to work at his father’s detective agency because it’s the last connection he has with his dad. His father stood by him when Kevin was expelled from the FBI, an incident that Kevin suggests might involve Ted.

Leah Power, a young lawyer, is on the verge of taking on a screenwriter as her new client. This situation makes Leah ponder her own aspirations of becoming a screenwriter and seeks a sabbatical from work, which she requests from Ted’s secretary, Roslyn. Roslyn gives Leah 48 hours to decide between law and writing. Leah submits some script samples under the pseudonym “Ezra Bridger” for review. Rick, who reads them, tells Leah they were not impressive and recognized the name as a character from “Star Wars.” He suggests that the pen name implies the writer lacks the necessary skills. Undeterred, Leah goes back to her new client and offers assistance in improving their script, which ultimately secures the client’s signature. When Leah informs Roslyn of this success, Roslyn is pleased because she was instrumental in getting Leah hired by Ted.

In addition to the John Amos storyline, the episode provides more focus on Ted. After Amanda Stevens assists with Lester’s trial, he proposes that she take over as Head of Criminal Defense at his law firm. She indicates that she’ll consider the offer. Flashbacks are interspersed throughout the episode, delving deeper into Ted’s relationship with his father. During the Pellegrini trial, Ted’s father reveals he is under investigation. Ted becomes concerned that this investigation may jeopardize his own career, leading him to request prosecuting his father. He also asks his father to testify against Pellegrini in exchange for witness protection.

‘Suits LA’ Needs Changes Following Lester’s Trial

Apart from some positive scenes such as Lester’s court case and the John Amos tribute, the recent episodes of Suits LA have been underwhelming. With only three episodes remaining this season and the trial already concluded, there seems to be uncertainty regarding what lies ahead. If Episode 7 serves as any prediction, these final episodes could be confusing and disjointed in terms of plot development. In essence, despite the show still having a few more episodes, it appears that optimism might be hard to come by.

The show “Suits LA” must establish itself firmly, but without a renewal at present, it may run out of time. Its decision to explore entertainment law offered numerous intriguing storylines, such as characters handling copyright disputes, movies being canceled due to tax incentives, and other captivating scenarios. However, these possibilities remain unrealized if “Suits LA” fails to secure another season.

The new installment of “Suits LA” is set to air on April 13th, starting at 9 p.m., on NBC. You can also catch it online by streaming it via Peacock.
