Although seeds had been sown for legacy heroes in prior Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) productions like “The Marvels,” learning which ones would feature in “Avengers: Doomsday” remained thrilling. The viral casting declaration, made by placing five hours of chairs before the camera to unveil the cast of the upcoming ensemble film, was chock-full of surprises. Apart from confirming that characters from “Thunderbolts” and “Fantastic Four: First Steps” would be in “Doomsday,” it also disclosed that many original “X-Men” from Bryan Singer and Brett Ratner’s trilogy would reappear. One such character is Nightcrawler, originally portrayed by , who has recently expressed his enthusiasm about reprising the role.

During an interview on the Today show with Jenna Bush Hager and Olivia Munn (formerly of the X-Men), Cumming discussed his upcoming role as the teleporting mutant. Surprised to be reprising the character after over two decades, the actor expressed delight at how much easier the makeup and prosthetic process has become. Excited about donning the superhero persona once more, despite his advanced age, Cumming appeared genuinely thrilled for this new adventure.

Isn’t it incredible? I’m thrilled and astounded. It’s been 23 years since I last played a superhero, and the transformation process has significantly improved. I’ve already undergone makeup tests for the role, and what’s fantastic is that application time has reduced from nearly 4 and a half hours to just 90 minutes. Previously, all tattoos were hand-painted, as we hadn’t decided on them before filming started. Now, they simply stick them onto my face. It’s a real game changer! I’m about to reprise the role of a 60-year-old superhero, and everyone seems genuinely kind.

Several ‘X-Men’ Characters Rely Heavily on Practical Effects

In the creation of film X2, it was disclosed that applying Alan Cumming’s makeup took approximately four hours, but if he went shirtless for a scene, it required nine hours. The original X-Men movie series boasted spectacular costumes and makeup, with Rebecca Romijn as Mystique being another striking example, given her elaborate design similar to Nightcrawler. As Romijn is set to reappear in Avengers: Doomsday, there’s curiosity about how far the makeup process has advanced for her too.

In the last movie of the original trilogy, X3: The Last Stand, Kelsey Grammer played Beast. Brett Ratner took over directing from Bryan Singer so he could work on Superman Returns instead. Grammer’s character was heavily made up and had blue fur, similar to Nicholas Hoult in the prequel films. Interestingly, for his appearance in The Marvels, Grammer will be created using CGI, unlike Sean Cumming who seems to be going through practical effects for Avengers: Doomsday.

The Russo Brothers face an intricate challenge, managing four distinct superhero groups and incorporating Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doctor Doom. Fortunately, they’re supported by a skilled ensemble cast, many of whom are familiar with their respective characters. With filming now underway, there’s a possibility we might see Cumming reappear in his signature blue makeup as the renowned mutant. However, the tight security mentioned recently could prevent such details from surfacing online.
