For most boys, the ambition of reaching the big leagues remains a childhood fantasy. However, Cam Booser stands out as the rare case who never let go of this dream – even in his thirties.

In reality, the repeatedly injured 31-year-old Booser never truly thought his moment would come. However, against all odds, it did happen, and Greg Whiteley’s cameras from Netflix (known for shows like ‘Cheer’, ‘America’s Sweethearts’, and ‘Last Chance U’) were there to record the special behind-the-scenes event. While The Hollywood Reporter has the exclusive rights to reveal this moment, it was actually a manager of a Red Sox minor league affiliate who captured it secretly using a hidden cell phone for ‘The Clubhouse: A Year with the Red Sox’. This particular scene is considered by many to be the most heartwarming in the entire eight-episode series.

The debut season of “The Clubhouse”, airing on Netflix starting April 8, delves into some somber territories. Specifically, episode 4, titled “Still Alive,” confronts the topic of mental health. Remarkably, Whiteley found that the project produced an unexpected emotional depth, which he admits he hadn’t foreseen initially, but in retrospect, it doesn’t surprise him.

In summary, Whiteley stated that being close to them revealed some unique aspects about baseball. Unlike other sports, it’s played over 162 games in a single season, necessitating unwavering concentration and determination every day. He also highlighted the high frequency of failure in baseball, with a great player being considered successful if they fail only seven times out of ten. Therefore, managing the extended season and dealing with frequent failures can be a significant mental challenge, making mental health a recurring topic in this series.

Booster’s absence from the major games wasn’t due to lack of skill; instead, his physical condition couldn’t keep up with the rigors of the game. After a fractured femur, a damaged vertebrae, and an elbow ligament tear necessitating Tommy John surgery, Booster unfortunately broke his back again while cycling. He was forced to retire from sports medicine at just 25 years old, swapping his glove for a carpenter’s square to work on acoustic ceilings. However, in 2021, the towering left-hander discovered he was free of pain and could throw at 98 mph while offering pitching lessons as a side job.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled about “The Clubhouse: A Year with the Red Sox,” a production by One Potato Productions, Boardwalk Pictures Inc., and MLB Studios that I can’t wait to watch. Although Netflix has previously delved into the world of the Red Sox with the docuseries “The Comeback: 2004 Boston Red Sox” back in October, what makes “The Clubhouse” unique is that it’s the first time Major League Baseball has given such unprecedented access to external cameras.

Whiteley mentioned that MLB proposed the idea to him approximately four years ago, which falls squarely within the timeframe of Cheer and coincides with the release of Last Chance U: Basketball. Unlike other professional sports leagues, Whiteley stated that Major League Baseball was prepared to grant us the necessary editorial control and access for a thorough documentary.

Ultimately, we ended up discussing our project with several teams, but it was clear that the Red Sox were the most prepared. They showed genuine excitement for our project and believed it could benefit both baseball and their organization. After speaking with them, I felt confident that this collaboration could be successful. However, I won’t proceed unless we receive the necessary access to tell the stories we aim to share. They arranged a meeting with the players, which was very open and honest. I laid out our intentions, and once we established a comfortable atmosphere, we all decided to move forward with the project.
