Estudio Material Unveils FRAGMENTS Furniture Collection at Alcova Milano

This year at the Alcova group showcase during Milan Design Week, Estudio Material from San Francisco unveils its FRAGMENTS MILANO assortment, an expansion of their ongoing project focusing on the untouched elegance found in repurposed stone fragments.

In the most recent installment of the series, Damaso Mayer, the original designer, worked alongside Sacco Natural Stone in the Chiavenna Valley of Italy. Here, he personally selected stone remnants for his outdoor exhibit at Villa Borsani. This installation symbolizes a conversation between organic and man-made materials. The collection employs an assortment of rough-hewn stones in conjunction with polished aluminum finishes. These diverse materials form a color scheme that draws inspiration from the lakes and mountains of Italy’s landscape.

This assortment includes a bench, multiple tables, and an artistic tower structure. It presents a thoughtful blend of rough and polished textures for a captivating contrast. The tables and seating areas exhibit stone slabs suspended in the misty metal surfaces, suggesting a simplified, industrial interpretation of terrazzo.

At Design.Space LA’s last exhibition, Mayer showcased works similar to those from a collaboration with quarries and stone yards in California, Mexico, and areas near Los Angeles. The designer’s focus on site-specific materials underscores the increasing emphasis on local manufacturing, reflecting both sustainability and cultural heritage. By reusing stones sourced locally, Mayer’s work minimizes transportation-related carbon emissions. At the same time, this project promotes local industries and offers a poetic tribute to the distinctive natural surroundings of the region.
