We Just Got a Huge Expansion to Jurassic World Dominion from an Unexpected Place

As fans eagerly anticipate Gareth Edward’s upcoming movie “Jurassic World Rebirth” (hitting theaters in July), they’re also discovering more lore and storylines about the Jurassic World universe right now. This week, DreamWorks Animation released season 3 of their animated series “Jurassic World: Chaos Theory”, marking the first time that the show’s plot has been connected to one of the franchise’s live-action films.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but express my excitement as we delve into the thrilling adventures of “Chaos Theory” Season 3! This captivating journey unfolds right in the midst of the events depicted in “Jurassic World Dominion,” now available from Universal Home Entertainment. The Nublar Six – Darius (Paul-Mikél Williams), Kenji (Ryan Potter), Brooklynn (Kiersten Kelly), Yaz (Kausar Mohammed), Ben (Sean Giambrone), and Sammy (Raini Rodriguez) – find themselves navigating the dangerous Malta dinosaur black market, joining forces with three characters from the Jurassic World film universe.

As a gaming enthusiast, I recently had an exclusive chat with Scott Kreamer, executive producer and co-showrunner of “Jurassic World: Chaos Theory”. We discussed how they skillfully crafted the series’ narrative to seamlessly intertwine with the events of “Dominion”. Here’s a glimpse into our conversation.

Colin Trevorrow gave his approval to introduce Jurassic World Dominion characters to Chaos Theory

In the process of crafting Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, Kreamer mentioned that they proposed several characters for inclusion in the narrative: Soyona Santos / The Broker (played by Dichen Lachman), Barry Sembène (voiced by Evan Michael Lee), and a return of Lewis Dodgson (Adam Harrington, who was previously seen in Camp Cretaceous). What made their proposal unique was the plan to weave the “Nublar Six” into the storyline of Dominion.

As a dedicated fan, I can share that during the season’s pause, I had the privilege of Colin Trevorrow stepping into our workspace for just a brief moment. He graciously gave us his seal of approval on everything we were working on, as he was the writer of Dominion. Given the extended production timeline of animation, we got the opportunity to review early cuts of Dominion, which allowed us to fine-tune and adapt our storylines for Chaos Theory accordingly.

Kreamer explains that this story is essentially the opposite of “Camp Cretaceous,” where we begin with a narrow focus and gradually expand. They spent a lot of time watching “Dominion” and delving into its details, especially wondering about Santos’ comment to Lewis Dodgson in the movie: “I wasn’t crazy about how it went last time…” This comment sparked much discussion among the writers about what Santos might have meant by that.

To elaborate on that topic, the Chaos Theory sheds light on a different side of the Biosyn tycoon, portraying him as not only cunning but also ruthless in his pursuit of dinosaurs. This is often achieved through questionable dealings with The Broker, who serves as his intermediary.

As a gamer, I was thrilled to delve deeper into actor Campbell Scott’s character, The Broker, in our recent project. In our previous work, like Camp Cretaceous, we only had a wardrobe fitting photo and a few lines of dialogue for him. But this time around, Colin and Campbell expanded the character significantly. It was a blast to bring him to life with more depth, playing with his absent-mindedness and humor. However, let’s not forget, The Broker isn’t exactly a good guy. He’s all about the bottom line, and sometimes it feels like he reflects the world as it is today.

Giving Jurassic World Dominion‘s Malta black market a lot more real estate in Chaos Theory

In the third season of “Chaos Theory,” episodes titled “No Escape” and “Active Pursuit,” the animated storyline merges with the narrative set in Malta from the series Dominion. Brooklyn, Santos’ assistant, is in Malta at this time due to her role, which places her alongside the Handler and their Atrociraptors. This coincides with the arrival of Owen Grady (portrayed by Chris Pratt) and Gwen (Bryce Dallas Howard), who are searching for their kidnapped daughter Maisie Lockwood (Isabella Sermon). In a pivotal scene, when Santos is confronted by Barry and French Intelligence near his truck filled with dinosaurs, it is disclosed that the characters from Chaos Theory were hidden within, concealed behind the boxes containing the dinos.

Later on, Darius, Yaz, and Ben navigate their way into a clandestine marketplace just prior to an attack, and afterwards, they end up in the market’s underground area after things take a turn for the worse. For the animation project titled Chaos Theory, the animators reconstruct this black market scene, incorporating the dinosaur species that were featured in the movie.

Kreamer stated, “My team, a group of ingenious problem solvers, was behind that project. Art director John-Paul Balmet, our lighting and composite supervisor Eric T. Hawkins, as well as designer Augusto Barranco, transformed various recycled assets into the black market by using resources we had on hand from different locations.

Kreamer admitted that aligning the market and dinosaurs with their smaller show was a massive undertaking, but they were confident the outcome would be rewarding. In other words, when they initially presented the concept to our main team and animation studio, they responded skeptically, saying something like, “No, this is too risky.” But Bethany and I persisted, approaching production and design, and suggested, “Well, we need this set. What options do we have?

They somehow managed to solve it with great skill, kudos to JP, Augusto, and Hawk for perfectly synchronizing the lighting and putting in an extraordinary amount of effort. It takes teamwork beyond what one might expect when attempting a feat that seems almost impossible.

When asked to share his favorite scenes from the series, Kreamer reminisced, “The brief moment of the Dimorphodon swooping past on a scooter. I was incredibly thrilled that we were able to include it, as this scene is well-known from Dominion.
