As a devoted cinephile with a soft spot for the chilling world of horror, it’s hard not to be aware of the legendary influence of the “Final Destination” franchise. The series is renowned for its outlandish and nerve-wracking death scenes, and even today, I find myself shuddering when driving behind a truck carrying logs – thanks to the haunting memories of “Final Destination 2”. So, hearing whispers about fresh methods of mortality that could potentially surpass the gruesome spectacles of past installments, I can’t help but feel an exhilarating mix of anticipation and apprehension. The creative minds behind “Bloodlines” have been promising a blood-soaked extravaganza, right down to their tantalizing pitch for the film, and I eagerly await seeing their vision unfold on the big screen.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, New Line’s Chief Creative Officer, Richard Brener, discussed the studio’s past and future. When asked about a rumor that directors Zack Lipovsky and Adam Stein created a video while pitching their film, Final Destination, Brener confirmed it, adding an interesting detail to the story:
In a rather unexpected twist, they essentially brought about their own demise during their presentation. Tragically, they perished while delivering it, leaving everyone stunned, taken aback, and admiring the ingenuity behind this turn of events. Moreover, their approach to storyboarding was quite unique, as they meticulously detailed each scene. Their abilities were nothing short of remarkable, and they skillfully incorporated technology in a way that complemented outstanding filmmaking skills.
For a series famously depicting bizarre and unconventional ways characters might perish, it’s fittingly authentic for the directors to meet their end within their own movie concept. Frankly, this boosts my faith in the upcoming sequel. To be honest, I wasn’t entirely convinced about another Final Destination installment. During its initial release, the sequels varied greatly in quality and often felt contrived and unnecessary. However, since the announcement, it’s been hinted that the creators aim to revolutionize the concept of death within the series.
Without a doubt, both the initial concept of the movie and the fervor with which the directors presented it make “Bloodlines” seem more like a heartfelt continuation rather than just another money-making installment in an IP series. Moreover, early reactions from those who’ve caught the CinemaCon special sneak peek suggest that it could potentially be the finest sequel within the horror genre, further fueling anticipation.
In summary, Bloodlines appears to be aiming for a unique spin while preserving key elements from the original series (and with Tony Todd’s return, that’s definitely a plus!). I can hardly wait to see how it unfolds, and with anticipation high, I eagerly look forward to its release in May 2025.
