What Episode Does Beth Greene Die On The Walking Dead?

In the fifth season’s eighth episode and mid-season finale titled “Coda,” Beth Greene (portrayed by Emily Kinney, who remains active in various projects) tragically met her end. Initially appearing on the brink of suicide in Season 2, she later evolved into a resilient survivor and cherished character within the series’ ensemble cast. Unfortunately, her life was prematurely taken, leaving many “The Walking Dead” viewers feeling that this was an unfair outcome. Beth’s tragic demise occurred at Grady Memorial Hospital under the control of Dawn Lerner (Christine Woods), the police lieutenant in charge, during a failed negotiation for her safety.

Beth’s hospital stay commences prior to the events we see. In the 13th episode of season 4, titled “Alone,” she is admitted when a horde of walkers overruns the house she and Daryl (Norman Reedus) were temporarily residing in. After a fire at the prison where they had been living, Beth and Daryl found themselves separated from their larger group. During an attack by walkers, Daryl stayed behind to deal with them, while Beth moved on ahead. Sadly, by the time he reached her, it was too late. He arrived in time to witness a car with a white cross on its back driving away, carrying his friend. Unable to catch up to the vehicle, he could only watch it disappear.

Beth doesn’t reappear until six episodes down the line, specifically in the fourth episode of the fifth season titled “Slabtown.” It turns out that she has been transported to a hospital where she will discover that while it is safe from walkers, there are threats far more dangerous than a zombie bite.

Grady Memorial’s many secrets

When Beth regains consciousness in a downtown Atlanta hospital, Dawn, the overseeing police officer, clarifies to her that she’s indebted to them for reviving her – Beth is assigned to work off her debt by serving as a nurse under Dr. Steven Edwards (Erik Jensen). Beth initially believes she’ll repay her debt and be released, but Noah, another hospital worker, cautions Beth that he hasn’t heard of anyone ever being permitted to depart once they’ve recovered.

In the meantime, Joan (Keshia Castle-Hughes), a worker who tried to flee the hospital and eventually lost her arm to a walker bite, seems to suggest that Dawn doesn’t effectively manage her officers. To illustrate this, Officer Gorman (Cullen Moss) starts to harass Beth sexually. However, his actions are interrupted by Dr. Edwards. Yet, Dr. Edwards is preoccupied with his own troubles. He orders Beth to give a drug that kills a patient known to Edwards as another doctor – someone who could potentially challenge his authority at the hospital.

In response to the worsening circumstances, Beth and Noah opt to flee. Miraculously, they succeed in breaking free and navigating through a horde of walkers. However, it’s only Noah who reaches safety. As fate would have it, Beth is apprehended by law enforcement officials and transported back to the hospital. Just then, Carol (portrayed by Melissa McBride) is wheeled in on a stretcher. As Dawn and another officer discuss whether or not to aid Carol, Dawn covertly hands Beth the key to the drug storage room, enabling her to retrieve the necessary medication for Carol’s survival.

What did the group do to get her back?

Before Carol reached the hospital, a team from the prison had been trying to save Beth, but they needed to locate her first. Daryl joined forces with Carol, and together they discovered a vehicle adorned with a white cross which contained supplies for Grady Memorial Hospital. Assuming that this was where Beth was, they moved towards a nearby hospital building to assess the situation. Along the way, they came across Noah who shared their desire to save Beth. As they planned to infiltrate the hospital, a patrol car struck Carol and took her away.

Daryl shares updates with Rick about Beth’s predicament, as well as Carol’s, prompting Rick to journey towards Atlanta and apprehend some law enforcement officers in a swap deal for Beth and Carol. In the meantime, Maggie, situated beyond Atlanta, learns from Michonne that Beth remains alive.

Following discussions with hospital staff regarding a trade proposal, Rick and their companions are escorted to the hospital to carry out the transaction. The exchange proceeded without incident; however, before Rick, Carol, Beth, and the rest could depart, Dawn demanded they return Noah. This demand infuriated Beth, who retaliated by stabbing Dawn with a pair of scissors. In response, Dawn instinctively fired her gun at Beth, fatally wounding her. Overwhelmed with anger, Daryl pulled out his pistol and shot and killed Dawn. As Daryl exited the hospital carrying Beth’s lifeless body, Maggie arrived. Upon witnessing her sister’s deceased form, Maggie broke down in tears.

A larger number of characters have perished in The Walking Dead than one might assume, yet Beth’s demise is notably gruesome and senseless. Despite being a character for only four seasons, Beth left a significant mark on viewers, and her passing had a profound effect on her co-survivors, particularly Daryl and Maggie.
