Over the past year or so, it’s been tough to see myself in Drake’s shoes, with everyone from the Inside the NBA team to President Obama seemingly taking him on amidst his beef with Kendrick Lamar. Despite his release of a new album in February, people just can’t seem to stop discussing K-Dot’s phenomenal Super Bowl Halftime Show. Now, a witty five-word comment on Justin Bieber‘s Instagram seems to have given Drake another knock.
Justin Bieber put out an open call over the weekend, asking artists to “Dm me if you wanna make music together,” according to an Instagram post that captured the request. Several big names reportedly took the Biebs up on his offer, including Kehlani, Big Sean and Jaden Smith. While we don’t know if the “Peaches” singer reached out to those interested parties, we know one guy who apparently didn’t get a response, as Drake commented:
I DM’d but no reply.
I find it quite intriguing that this situation amuses me, as one might wonder why Drake would compose such a text. Since Justin Bieber didn’t disclose if he responded to any messages from people who could have messaged him, it appears that Drake was inviting more ridicule, and those in the comments certainly took advantage of the opportunity, writing:
- Drake needs to read the room 😅 – shellie_molleck
- Drake needs to take a hint – chloropheels
- Cause he wanted Kendrick to dm… – davellanet
- Why would this man embarrass himself further by commenting that 🥴 – cupidslabyrinth
- Justin’s like…. anyone else? – the_colorado_mom
It could be that the statement made by the artist, known as Drake (whose real name is Aubrey Graham), was meant to be sarcastic. This is because it’s likely that Justin Bieber, his follower count not including Drake on Instagram, might not have received a direct message from him initially. However, it seems that Drake does follow both Justin and his wife Hailey Bieber on the platform.
Drake and Justin Bieber go way back, with their friendship stretching over more than ten years. In 2012, Drake made an appearance on Bieber’s third album titled “Believe,” and he also collaborated on a remix of Bieber’s song “Trust Issues” alongside another Canadian artist.
As a moviegoer, I can’t help but wonder if the “Justice” artist has no desire to collaborate with Drake anymore, given all that’s unfolded between them in the last year. The clash between the “Nokia” singer and Kendrick Lamar was the talk of pop culture in 2024, escalating into a full-blown rap battle. The battle cry “Not Like Us,” from Kendrick Lamar, was seen as a clear victory when he dropped his diss track.
The song, titled and directed towards Drake, received criticism for cultural appropriation and sexual misconduct allegations, ultimately dominated the Grammys by winning every award it was nominated for: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song, and Best Music Video. Furthermore, an extra layer of provocation unfolded at the Super Bowl.
It’s unclear what exactly happened between Justin Bieber and Drake (or whether anything actually transpired, as it seems), but given that Drake has been receiving a lot of criticism for his diss track and the legal action he’s taken against it, I can’t blame Bieber for wanting to distance himself.
